The need to accurate quantification of blast pressure loading in the near field is important because the focus of security design of critical infrastructure, buildings and bridges is for near-field detonations. Incident and reflected pressures for near-field detonations are very difficult to be measured by commercially available pressure transducers due to the high pressure and temperature, which requires a verified and validated computational fluid dynamics code to reasonably predict the near-field pressures and impulses. This paper presents numerical studies to verify and validate a CFD code for calculations of incident and reflected overpressures and impulses. The near field is emphasized and recommendations for mesh sizes to optimally simulate the near-field detonation are provided.

Korean higher education institutions are facing unprecedented pressure at the threshold of the 4th industrial era. In response, they are reflecting and re‐shaping their identities in order to innovate. This study aims to interpret how today’s Korean universities represent their identities in the ‘Welcoming Message from the President’ on their university websites. The linguistic messages and images of the pages are analyzed from the perspective of critical discourse analysis. The analysis results can be summarized in terms of field and tenor. First, the findings suggest that most of the universities view themselves as having led the country’s democratization and industrialization, and they are preparing for our future society. Since universities are an institution closely related to their host society, this research indicates that the institutions focus on social responsibilities required in the contemporary Korean society. Second, the results show that the trend towards internationalization in universities around the world is also influencing the identity shaping of Korean universities. The Korean university discourse is identified as more customer‑oriented than ever. These features are revealed in both linguistic messages and also images.

The purpose of this study is to explore how Korean universities recognize the future by investigating the use of language on the “Greetings from President” page of 30 Korean university websites from the perspective of discourse semantics. To this end, 1) it examines whether universities as a leading institution in predicting the future and fostering talents in the society, exist as an influential or affected entity in its relation with ‘the future.’ 2) In addition, it investigates how the future is represented in a discourse, using Martin & White (2005)’s Appraisal Theory as an analysis frame. The results of the study show that universities view the future as an object that can be changed and created with their current efforts and can be given the direction in which it should move forward. Another finding shows that it is not a momentary situational judgement or emotion that affects the way universities perceive the ‘future’, but cognition created by long-standing practices.

Using an analytic framework derived from the work of Martin and White (2005), this study compares Korean and American news editorials about the Korean ferry disaster in 2014. The aim of this study is two-fold: one is to explore how cultural and situational context influences stances on a specific event and the other is to demonstrate how Martin and White’s appraisal framework can be used for a comparative discourse analysis between Korean and English. The results revealed that the disaster was portrayed from a different angle in the two cultures. Korean editorials focused on details of the accident as an inside viewer on the spot and subjectively described their stances by restricting dialogically alternative positions and voices. American editorials focused on its general surroundings as an outside viewer and made allowances for dialogically alternative positions and voices. These findings suggest that psychological and physical distance as well as culture is an important variable in cross-cultural discourse study and that the appraisal framework can be of much use for a comparative discourse analysis between Korean and English.
