Vol.10 No.1
For the purpose of determining the growth characteristics and nutritional utilization of kerationophilic fungi of the soil origin, the author has isolated four species of fungi such as M. gypseum, Chrysosporium sp., K. ajelloi and M. cookei from various sources and these strains were inoculated into both Georg's trichophyton differential media and various kinds of amino acid added ammonium nitrate agar, and then observed growth characteristics such as colonial morphology, growth rate and pigmentation, with the survey of size and morphology of macroconidia formed on various media. 1. The four kinds of keratinophilic fungi grown on thiamine, inositol and nicotinic acid casein agar revealed luxuriant growth macroscopically, but ammonium nitrate and histidine ammonium nitrate agar showed scanty growth. 2. M. gypseum grown on thiamine and inositol casein agar revealed abundant pleomorphic growth. Chrysosporium sp. grown on nicotinic acid casein agar exhibited scant plemorphic growth. 3. K. ajelloi and M. cookei formed pure powderly colonies on all differential media. 4. Among 42 strains of chrysosporium sp. 14 strains (33.3%) formed powderly colonies regardless of composition of medium. The other strains are variable in colonial appearance. 5. The reverse color of 21 strains of K. ajelloi, appeared deep dark violet color of 20 strains grown on thiamine casein agar and crimson color of the all strains grown on casein agar and inositol casein agar while no color change of 13 strains grown on ammonium nitrate agar and variable on Sabouraud media. 6. All 14 strains of M. cookei grown on thiamine casein agar showed crimson on reverse color however no crimson color formed on ammonium nitrate agar. 7. Although amino acid utilization is variable according to a kind of keratinophilic fungi, M. gypseum grown on valine, chrysosporium on valine and seirne, K. ajelloi on cystine, serine and valine, and M. cookei on isoleucine and phenylalanine revealed poor growth. 8. Chrysosporium, K. ajelloi and M. cookei grown on alanine and M. gypseum and K. ajelloi on methoinine revealed poor growth. 9. Relationship between nutrition and size of macroconidia: 1) M. gypseum grown on thiamine, inositol and nicotinoc acid casein agar increased in its size. 2) K. ajelloi grown on inositol and nicotinic acid casein agar increased in its size while the growth on ammonium nitrate agar decreased in its size. 3) M. cookei grown on all differential media decreased in its size. 10. Relationship between various amino acidd and size of macroconidia showed that four kinds of keratinophilic fungi grown on alanine, tyrosine and leucine increased in its size. 1) M. gypseum grown on threonine increaed mostly in its size. 2) Although K. ajelloi grown on all kinds of amino acid except glutamic acid increased in its size and most remarkable on alanine. 3) M. cookei grown on phenylalanine increased most in its size while grown on leucine mostly decreased. 11. There was no correlation between macroscopic colonial morphology of the various differential agar and amino acid added agar and size of macroconidia.

An extensive clinical investigation mostly conducted by the mobile leprosy clinic was made on 4, 017 home and colony patients in Kyungpook province during period of May 1958 to July 1960, and a particular attention was directed on the study of nature of 804 colony patients among the investigated. Results obtained are summerized as follows : 1) Total number of leprosy patients in Kyungpook province was 6, 765, number of registered home and colony patients being 4, 017 and sanatorium patients 2, 748. The ratio of leprosy patients to 1, 000 Kungpook population was 1.87 and the distribution of patients was highest in Taegu city, its patient number being 524. 2) Monthly detection number of leprosy patients has been gradually declined in the past -3 years, 121 patients in 1958, 114 patients in 1959 and 72 patients in 1960. 3) Number of patients in the types of leprosy was in the order of L type(1, 887 cases, 46.9%), T type(1, 490 cases, 37.0%), I group(378 cases, 9.4%) and B group (10 cases). The L type was found to be dominant in colony patients than in home patients, on the other hand, I group was dominant in home patients than in colony patients. 4) The educational level was higher in colony patients than in home patients, number of patients who read Korean language being 264 cases (39.6%) in the former group comparing to 1, 088 cases (48.3%) of the illiteracy in home patients. 5) The ratio of male to female was 1.85:1 in colony patients and 2. 3:1 in homepatients. The age wive had a peak between 26 and 30 years (689 cases, 17.1%). 6) The onset of the disease was highest between 16 and 25 years (1, 415 cases. 44%). The anesthesia(1, 068 cases, 40.3%) was highest first symptom and the primary lesion (2, 231 cases, 84.6%) was highest in exposured area of body. 7) Number of patients whose disease was advanced as to cause effects on the work activity was 196 (6.1%) in home patients and 207(25.7%) in colony patients which is one fourth of all the colony patients, 8) Estimated total leprosy patients in Kyungpook province was approximately 20, 000 to 35, 000.
