Roatry kiln is used for thermal treatment of ore that requires a long residence time and high temperature. In this study, NH₃ cofiring in a coal burner of a ratary kiln for ore processing was investigated using computational fluid dynamics to identify issues associated with stable ignition, flame pattern, heat transfer, and NO<SUB>x</SUB> emission. At a cofiring ratio of 20%, the NH₃ injection caused unstable combustion by disturbing the ignition of product gas. Therefore, the use of swirling air was essential to create an internal circulation zone at the center of the flame near the burner trip. which also contributed to suppressing the NO<SUB>x</SUB> emission similar to that for the coal-only firing case. In addition, the partial cracking of NH₃ prior to the injection was found effective in reducing the NO<SUB>x</SUB> emission.
