The goal of this study is to examine how journalists process raw information when they produce news stories. To accomplish this goal, the dissertation used the concept of 'need for closer', the degree to which a person is motivated to pursue and rely on relatively clear, unambiguous, and stable knowledge. It also adopted the concept of 'schema' that leads to a stereotype information process. Finally, it used the concept of 'news-making belief systems' which help us identify a journalist as a detached observer or interpreter. Survey results showed that the veteran and the conservative journalists are more inclined to have a high degree of need for closer and schema-driven information processes. This result shows that when journalists are too immersed in a common occurrence of news making, they are apt to produce a stereotyped news story. Confirmed was the hypothesis that objectivity-oriented journalists may have a high degree of need for closer and schema-driven information processing. It has also been proven that interpretation-oriented journalists show a lower degree of 'need for closer and schema-driven information processing'. The cognitive complexity shows a positive correlation with 'need for closer', but does not suggest significant correlation with schema-driven information processing. Schema-driven information processing, an important dependent variable in this study, means heuristic, defaulting and stereotyping information processing. Thus, this study explains the origin of stereotyped and slanted news making mechanism from a microanalysis point of view.
