With the increase of demand for electricity power, new construction and expansion of transmission lines for transport have been required. However, it has been difficult to be realized by such opposition from environmental groups and residents. Therefore, the development of techniques for effective use of existing transmission lines is more needed. In this paper, the major variables to affect the allowable transmission capacity in an overhead transmission lines were selected and the dynamic line rating (DLR) method using artificial neural networks reflecting unique environment-heat properties was proposed. To prove the proposed method, the analyzed results using the artificial neural network were compared with the ones obtained from the existing method. The analyzed results using the proposed method showed an error of 0.9% within ±, which was to be practicable.

The development of the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) to apply into a power transmission system where makes larger fault current compared to the power distribution system has been performed. Among various SFCLs, the trigger-type SFCL is suitable for application into the power transmission system due to the effective reduction on power burden of the high temperature superconducting element (HTSC) for the larger fault current. To protect the power transmission line in the power grid, the distance relay, which decides to interrupt fault section where can be calculated by the measured voltage and current from sound grid, is one of important protective devices in the power transmission system. However, the operation of the distance relay from the impedance of the fault point on the transmission line is affected by the impedance of the trigger-type SFCL. Therefore, the analysis on the operational characteristics of distance relay considering the application of the SFCL is required. In this paper, the effect on the operation zones of the distance relay by the impedance of the SFCL in a power transmission system was analyzed through the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.

Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been expected as one of more effective solutions for decreasing fault current instantaneously and various types of SFCLs have been developed to apply into real power system. Recently, the application of the SFCL in a power distribution system has been reported to be contributed to the suppression of the voltage sag as well as the limitation of the fault current. However, the suppressing effect of voltage sag by the SFCL depends on component of its impedance and its application location in a power distribution system considering the recloser-recloser coordination. This paper analyzed the voltage sag caused by recloser-recloser coordination in a power distribution system and the suppression of the voltage sag due to the application location of the SFCL in a power distribution system was discussed through the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.
