The status of parasitic infection and total serum protein of mice were examined for the evaluation of laboratory usefulness of mice in various experiments. For the purpose, total 100 mice were supplied from two breeding places, A and B, in Seoul area. Three consecutive examinations of feces and gastrointestinal contents by the direct smear method and determination of total serum protein by the Biuret method were performed. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Among 100 mice, 95%(95.0) was positive for the intestinal helminths (A:100%, B:90%) 2. Recovery rate of parasite from gastrointestinal contents was higher (95%) than twice as great as that (47%) from feces. 3. Parasites recovered were 4 species and infection rates were Syphacia obvelata 90.0%, Hymenolepis nana 51.0%, Trichostrongylus vitrinus 1.0% and Protospirurida muris 1.0%, respectively. 4.Five healthy (non-parasite infected) mice revealed the range of total serum protein 5.7∼8.0gm% and average 6.84±0.35gm%. On the other hand, in 10 mice infected with parasite, the range and average of total serum protein were revealed 4.0∼6.9gm% and 5.62±0.29gm%. The difference of total serum protein between mice in healthy and infected with parasite was statistically significant (P<0.05). From the overall results, parasite in mice is considered to be a factor influencing upon total serum protein. The supply of specific pathogen free (S. P. F.) animals including mice should be realized urgently and satisfactorily for the accuracy in laboratory experiments.
