唐 高宗代 한반도 상황변화와 高句麗의 대응 -고구려 멸망 원인과 관련하여-

당 고종이 재위하던 660년대 한반도에서는 백제 멸망, 나당연합군과 백제 부흥군의 악전고투, 백강구전투, 그리고 고구려의 멸망과 신라의 삼국통일 등 일련의 굵직한 사건들이 이어졌다. 당이 신라와 연합하여 백제에 대한 군사행동에 직면하여 당과 한반도 교섭에서 중요한 한 축이었던 고구려는 당과 신라의 계속되는 압력에 맞서 내부 갈등이 고조되었다. 이 때문에 고구려는 나당연합군의 백제 멸망 작전에 대응할 여력이 없어 백제부흥군의 패망을 수수방관하였고, 백강구 전투 때에는 어부지리를 노리고 참전하지 않았다. 이렇게 한반도에서의 상황이 급변하는 결정적인 순간에 고구려는 그동안 견지해 왔던 강경노선 때문에 아무런 대응을 할 수 없었고, 마침내 스스로 멸망을 재촉하고 말았다. 약소한 국가가 강한 국가를 만났을 때 강경 일변도의 대응은 결코 최선의 선택이 될 수 없다. 고구려가 당과의 관계에서 앞뒤가 서로 맞지 않은 다른 대응조치를 선택한 것은 결국 스스로 멸망을 자초한 것으로 당연한 결과였다. In the 760s when Emperor of Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty was in the reign, a series of significant events happened in the Korean Peninsula, including the downfall of the Baiji kingdom, hard fighting be-tween the Tang garrison in Xinluo and the reviving troops of Baiji, the battle at the mouth of the Bai River, and the perish of the Gaoli kingdom. In face of the military actions of the Tang-Xinluo allies to Baiji, Gaoli as an important side in the negotiation between theTang Dynasty and Korean Peninsula coped weakly with the allies’actions to annihilate Baiji because it had to deal with continuous pressures from the Tang Dynasty and Xinluo and with acute internal contradictions. Even worse, it watched the annihilation of the reviving troops of Baiji without offering any help and was silently absent from the battle at the mouth of the Bai River attempting to take some unexpected gain. At the critical moment of radical changes in the peninsula, Gaoli gave up its former tough and high-tuning strategies and became inactive and incapable, which sped up its downfall in the end. In face, Gaoli’s clearly different tactics in coping with its relations with the Tang Dynasty in the early and later days led necessarily to its final downfall.
