Plant Assemblages Along an Altitudinal Gradient in Northwest Himalaya

Bhupendar Gupta,Navneet Sharma 강원대학교 산림과학연구소 2015 Journal of Forest Science Vol.31 No.2

The study investigates herbage communities along the altitudinal gradient in northwest Himalaya and highlights the effect of trees on its understory floristic diversity and phytosociology. The study was conducted in nine forests at three elevations viz., chir pine (Pinus roxburghii), mixed and khair (Acacia catechu) forests at elevation E1 (850-1150 m), chir pine, mixed and ban oak (Quercus leucotrichophora) forests at elevation E2 (1151-1600 m) and ban oak, mixed and chir pine forests at elevation E3 (>1600 m) in a sub-watershed located in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, India. These were compared grasslands located adjacent to forests. In all, 20 grass, 3 sedge, 2 forb and 4 legume species were recorded in study sites. Jaccard’s coefficient of herbage vegetation was highest between chir pine forests and grasslands, and lowest in khair and ban oak forests. TWINSPAN dendrogram of herbage composition exhibited three subtypes with Apluda mutica, Arundinella nepalensis and Dichanthium annulatum as indicator species. Three groups of plant communities were identified on the basis of their moisture requirement. Peak density and basal area of herbage in forests and grasslands occurred by September. Density and basal area of herbage in grasslands at different elevations ranged from 649.6 to 1347.9 tillers/m2 and 30.0 to 65.7 cm2/m2, respectively, while, in forests it varied from 351.2 to 1005.3 tillers/m2 and 14.9 to 43.9 cm2/m2, respectively. Density and basal area of the herbage in plant communities decreased along the elevation. Under trees in forests the density of herbage decreased up to 77% and basal area up to 62% of their respective values in grasslands.

The study was conducted in nine forests at three elevations viz., chir pine (Pinus roxburghii), mixed and khair (Acacia catechu) forests at elevation $E_1$ (850-1150 m), chir pine, mixed and ban oak (Quercus leucotrichophora) forests at elevation $E_2$ (1151-1600 m) and ban oak, mixed and chir pine forests at elevation $E_3$ (>1600 m) in a sub-watershed located in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Three groups of plant communities were identified on the basis of their moisture requirement. Peak density and basal area of herbage in forests and grasslands occurred by September. • Effective Analysis of Lung Infection using Fuzzy Rules

        Sharad Kumar Tiwari,Navneet Walia,Harsukhpreet Singh,Anurag Sharma 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Bio-Science and Bio-Techn Vol.7 No.6

Soft Computing is a consortium of methodologies which works synergistically and provides an ability to make decision from reliable data or expert’s experience. Nowadays different types of soft computing techniques such as neural network, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithm and hybrid system are largely used in medical areas. In this paper, algorithm for analysis of lung infection is presented. The main focus is to develop system architecture to find probable disease stage patient may have. Severity level of disease is determined by using rule base method. The algorithm uses output of Rulebase and entered by user to determine level of infection.

Primary pyomyositis in North India: a clinical, microbiological, and outcome study

( Susheel Kumar ),( Ashish Bhalla ),( Rajveer Singh ),( Navneet Sharma ),( Aman Sharma ),( Vikas Gautam ),( Surjit Singh ),( Subhash Varma ) 대한내과학회 2018 The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine Vol.33 No.2

Background/Aims: Pyomyositis is an infective condition with primary involvement of the skeletal muscles. There is sparse recent literature on patients with pyomyositis. Methods: This study was carried out at emergency services of a tertiary care center located in subtropical area of Indian subcontinent. Results: Sixty-two patients of primary pyomyositis formed the study cohort. Mean age of occurrence was 29.9 ± 14.8 years. There were 54 men. Twelve patients had underlying medical diseases. Muscle pain was seen in all 62 patients. Forty-eight patients (77.4%) had the fever. Most common site of involvement was thigh muscles (n = 29, 46.8%). Forty-nine patients (79%) presented in the suppurative stage of illness. Patients with comorbidities were older (age: median 36 years [interquartile range (IQR), 25 to 47] vs. 24 years [IQR, 16 to 35], p = 0.024), had higher culture positivity with gram-negative organisms (8/9 [88.89%] vs. 6/29 [20.69%], p = 0.001). Importantly, higher number of these patients received inappropriate antibiotics initially. Patients with positive pus culture result had higher complication rate (32/38 [84.21%] vs. 10/18 [55.56%], p = 0.044). Six patients (9.7%) had in-hospital mortality. Lower first-day serum albumin, initial inappropriate antibiotic therapy, and advanced form of the disease at presentation were associated with increased in-hospital mortality. Conclusions: Primary pyomyositis is not an uncommon disease entity. Patients with comorbidities were more likely to receive initial inappropriate antibiotic therapy. Patients with positive pus culture report had the higher rate of complications. Lower first-day serum albumin, initial inappropriate antibiotic therapy and advanced form of the disease at presentation were associated with increased in-hospital mortality.

      • ZnO decorated with organic nanoparticles based sensor for the ratiometric selective determination of mercury ions

        Kaur, Narinder,Singh, Jasminder,Raj, Pushap,Singh, Narinder,Singh, Harpreet,Sharma, Sanjeev K.,Kim, Deuk Young,Kaur, Navneet The Royal Society of Chemistry 2016 New journal of chemistry Vol.40 No.2

ZnO nanoparticles decorated with organic receptor 1 (R1) have been prepared and the resultant compound (N1) was investigated for its metal recognition ability. N1 was found to be selective for mercury ions (Hg2+) in a DMSO/water mixture in a ratio of 7 : 3 and possessed no interference from any of the potential interferent metal ions. The crystal size and morphology of ZnO is characterized using various spectroscopic and diffraction techniques like scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), etc. Surface decoration of the ZnO with receptor 1 is confirmed using NMR spectroscopy. On successive additions of Hg2+ ions, the fluoresence intensity of the compound was quenched at 427 nm with enhancement of the peak at 482 nm, which led to ratiometric sensor development for the recognition of mercury ions having a detection limit of 0.19 nM. The prepared receptor was also tested for real sample application by preparing a known concentration of Hg2+ solution and it was found to respond well with an accuracy more than 90%.
