Relationship of Nitrate Reductase Activity to Leaf Yield, Protein, Sugar and Physiological Attributes in Mulberry (Morus alba L.)

        M. K. Ghosh,B. K. Das,C. Das,A. K. Mishra,P. K. Mukherjee,S. Raje Urs 한국잠사학회 2004 International Journal of Industrial Entomology Vol.8 No.1

Ten improved mulberry varieties (V1, C1730, C2016, C2017, Anantha, RFS-175, Thallaghatapura, Vishala, S1 and S1635) were evaluated through enzyme assay and estimation of soluble protein content followed by regression analysis, grown under irrigated conditions in the alluvial soils of Gangetic plains of West Bengal in India for five successive crops in a year. The nitrate reductase (EC No. 1.6.6.1) activity (NRA, mmol NO2 - h-1g-1 fr. wt.), total soluble protein (mg g-1 fr. wt.) was estimated which showed to vary significantly in the tested varieties. In addition to these, the other parameters like unit leaf fresh and dry weight (g), moisture%, unit leaf area (cm2), specific leaf weight (g cm-2), total soluble sugar (mg g-1 fr. wt.), leaf yield/plant (kg), shoot yield/plant (kg) and net photosynthetic rate (NPR, mmol m-2 s-1) were also studied which showed to vary significantly in tested varieties. Among them, S1635, having higher NRA (13.25 mmol NO2 - h-1g-1 fr. wt.), total soluble protein (39.63 mg g-1 fr. wt.), NPR (16.66 mmol m-2 s-1), total soluble sugar (48.44 mg g-1 fr. wt.), leaf yield/plant (0.689 kg) and shoot yield/plant (1.135 kg) showed its superiority over other tested varieties. Regression and correlation coefficients were analysed, and a strong positive correlation was found between NRA & total soluble protein, NRA & NPR, NRA & total soluble sugar, NRA & unit leaf weight, NRA & specific leaf weight, NRA & leaf yield/plant, NRA & shoot yield/plant, NPR & leaf yield and NPR & specific leaf weight.

Different approaches of alternative medicines in $acne$ $vulgaris$ treatment

        Ghosh, V.K.,Nagore, D.H.,Kadbhane, K.P.,Patil, M.J. 경희한의학연구센터 2011 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.11 No.1

Acne vulgaris is common dermatological disorder primarily acts on children and adolescents. This affects approximately 80% of the population between the ages of 12-25 years. The clinically used anti-acne drugs suffer from the disadvantage of side effects and high cost of treatment. Alternative to these drugs are traditional medicines and natural products, which offer a great hope in the identification of bioactive lead compounds and their development into drugs for the treatment of skin disorder like acne vulgaris. The use of traditional medicines and phytopharmaceuticals for treating various skin ailments dates back several centuries. The aim of the present review is to compile relevant data on the mechanisms of action of various natural compounds from ethnomedicinal plants and their role in the resolution of acne vulgaris. An attempt is also being made to enumerate the possible leads from Indian traditional medicinal system for the treatment of acne. We tried to provide the readers with the array of outcome variables, which can be further worked upon in clinical studies. Finally, this paper puts forth issues that need to be addressed by researchers in the future.

      • Comparative Transcriptomic Analyses by RNA-seq to Elucidate Differentially Expressed Genes in the Muscle of Korean Thoroughbred Horses

        Ghosh, M.,Cho, H. W.,Park, J. W.,Choi, J. Y.,Chung, Y. H.,Sharma, N.,Singh, A. K.,Kim, N. E.,Mongre, R. K.,Huynh, D. Springer Science + Business Media 2016 Applied biochemistry and biotechnology Vol.180 No.3

The athletic abilities of the horse serve as a valuable model to understand the physiology and molecular mechanisms of adaptive responses to exercise. We analyzed differentially expressed genes in triceps brachii muscle tissues collected from Eonjena Taeyang and Jigusang Seryeok Thoroughbred horses and their co-expression networks in a large-scale RNA-sequence dataset comparing expression before and after exercise. High-quality horse transcriptome data were generated, with over 22 million 90-bp pair-end reads. By comparing the annotations, we found that MYH3, MPZ, and PDE8B genes in Eonjena Taeyang and PDE8B and KIF18A genes in Jigusang Seryeok were upregulated before exercise. Notably further, we observed that PPP1R27, NDUFA3, TNC, and ANK1 in Eonjena Taeyang and HIF1A, BDNF, ADRB2, OBSCN, and PER3 in Jigusang Seryeok have shown upregulation at the postexercise period. This investigation suggested that genes responsible for metabolism and oxidative phosphorylations associated with endurance and resistance exercise were highly expressed, whereas genes encoding structural proteins were generally suppressed. The expression profile of racehorses at pre- and postexercise will provide credible reference for further studies on biological effects such as responses to stress and adaption of other Thoroughbred horse, which might be useful for selective breeding for improvement of traits in commercial production.

Aberration in the structural paradigm of lens protein α crystallin by UV-C irradiation

        Ghosh, R.K.,Kar, T.,Dutta, B.,Pathak, A.,Rakshit, R.,Basak, R.,Das, A.,Waheeda, K.,Basak, P.,Bhattacharyya, M. The Korean Society for Applied Biological Chemistr 2018 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.61 No.3

The conformation of lens protein ${\alpha}$ crystallin was investigated using different spectroscopic techniques under normal and UV-C-irradiated condition. The structural elucidation of commercially available lens protein ${\alpha}$ crystallin under the effects of UV-C irradiation has never been reported earlier. To study the effects of irradiation on the lens protein, we used UV-visible spectroscopy, CD spectroscopy, and steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements along with FTIR study, under increasing doses of UV-C irradiation. Using the secondary and tertiary structural changes as parameters for detecting conformational perturbation, we investigated the structural paradigm shift in the lens protein ${\alpha}$ crystallin. Increasing doses of UV-C radiation resulted in decreasing ${\beta}$ sheet content of ${\alpha}$ crystallin from 30 to 10%. The fluorescence profile confirmed the formation of ROS species in the protein upon extensive exposure to UV-C irradiation. These results inferred UV-C irradiation may induce alteration of secondary structure of the lens protein leading to impaired biological functioning.

      • Characterization of Rock Materials based on Signal Emission levels Under Uni-Axial Compression

        K.U.M. Rao,Subir Kumar Ghosh,Sudipta Bhattacharjee,D. Deb,Samir K.Pal 한국암반공학회 2010 한국암반공학회 학술대회 및 세미나 자료집 Vol.2010 No.10

Characterization of engineering materials is an essential aspect of manufacturing, since the properties of both the job and the tool influence each other. Experimental work is conducted to detect acoustic, vibration and electromagnetic emissions produced during uniaxial compressive loading of rock specimens. Preliminary results of testing limestone, quartz and sandstone rock specimens are presented. Some results of testing granite and coal samples are also presented. Results indicate that different types of AE, vibration and EM signals are produced during testing of a rock type to failure. In rock drilling one of the main consumables is the cutting tool. The performance of the cutting tool and its life is also controlled by the properties of the job (rock). The present work aims at characterization of rock material based on the physical and mechanical properties, as well as the levels of acoustic emissions and electromagnetic emission under uni-axial compression with the help of appropriate sensors and instrumentation.

Biswas, M.,Biswas, K.,Ghosh, A.K.,Haldar, P.K. Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Research Center 2009 Oriental pharmacy and experimental medicine Vol.9 No.4

In present study evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity of the compound obtained from the petroleum ether (40 - 60$^{\circ}C$) extract of the fruits from Dregea volubilis in Swiss albino mice and in Wister albino rats respectively. Dried and crushed fruits of Dregea volubilis were extracted by petroleum ether (40 - 60$^{\circ}C$), the proper solvent system was developed by TLC and subjected to column chromatography for obtaining the pure compound/s. IR, MASS, NMR (PMR, C13 NMR and DEPT) spectroscopic analysis were done to elucidate the structure of the compound/s. The petroleum ether (40 - 60$^{\circ}C$) extract of the fruits of Dregea volubilis led to isolation of a pentacyclic triterpenoid designated as taraxerone and characterized as D- friedoolean- 14- en, 3 one. Taraxerone had been screened for analgesic activity in Swiss albino mice and anti-inflammatory activity in Wister albino rats at the dose of 5 mg/kg body weight orally and exhibit significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.
