This study was conducted to find out the performance of silicon foliar spray treatment on storability of truss tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Campari and Temptation) in MA (20,000 cc/m2 · day· atm O2 permeability film) storage. Tomatoes were grown by hydroponics at Gangwon province in Korea during the winter, harvested at light red maturity stage and packaged with MA condition for stored at 8℃ and to investigate the storability. The silicon sprayed as a whole plant that displayed the utmost visual quality had the oxygen 5.94-12.28%, carbon dioxide 6.72-7.94% and ethylene concentration around 0.43-1.67 μL/L of ‘Campari’ and the oxygen 3.82-10.84%, carbon dioxide 7.40-10.20% and ethylene concentration around 0.69-1.75 μL/L of ‘Temptation’. The range of fresh weight loss of ‘Campari’ was less than 0.22% and ‘Temptation’ was less than 0.20% during the storage period at 8℃. The higher visual quality maintained by silicon sprayed as a whole plant than other treatments of both cultivars on the MA storage period at 8℃. The silicon sprayed as a whole plant had a positive effect to reduce the fungal incidence of both cultivars during the MA storage period at 8℃. Moreover, the silicon sprayed as a whole plant showed more prominent firmness than other treatments for storage days of both cultivars. Therefore, the silicon foliar sprays as whole plant has the positive effect to advance storability, reduced fungal incidence, maintained vitamin C, soluble solids and retain firmness.
Ultraviolet Light (UV-C) Irradiation Reduced Postharvest Fungal Incidence of Cherry Tomato

This study was conducted to reduce the postharvest fungal incidence of cherry tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Unicorn) by ultraviolet light (UV-C) irradiation in MA storage. Hydroponic grown red maturity stage of cherry tomatoes was collected from Gangwon province. Tomato fruits were inoculated with Botrytis cinerea (grey mould). Afterwards, ultraviolet irradiation (254 nm, UV-C) of 7, 14, 21 and 28 kJ/m2 treated to tomato fruits. And treated UV-C tomatoes were packed with MA condition (20,000 cc/m2.day.atm O2 permeability film) to store at 5˚C for 20 days with 85% relative humidity. The 28 kJ treatment which showed the best visual quality maintained around 3.30-6.60% of carbon dioxide concentration and 16.08-17.50% oxygen and 0.26-1.11 μL/L ethylene during the storage. As storage periods progressed, the fresh weight loss was increased but did not exceed the maximum permissible of fresh weight loss. The 28 kJ performed the highest firmness among the treatments. The UV-C treatments demonstrated the less fungal incidence than control. The 28 kJ treatments exhibited the best visual quality, firmness, titratable acidity and less fungal incidence among the treatments. So, ultraviolet (UV-C) irradiation reduced postharvest fungal incidence of cherry tomato.

We studied the magnetoresistance (MR) of twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) on electron transparent substrate. Samples of tBLG were assembled on free-standing silicon nitride (SiNx) membranes (<100nm thick) by transferring chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown single layer graphene (SLG) twice; this allowed the measurement of the angle of rotation between the two layers, the twist angle, by electron diffraction using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). To compare with the previous reports on tBLG, we performed Raman spectroscopy on our samples. We measured the MR of tBLG for two different twist angles: 2o (small) and 18o (large). The MR showed superposition of two Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillations for both angles. An analysis of the oscillation peaks by Landau fan diagrams showed difference as twist angle. While the large twist angle (18o) sample had two anomalous π Berry's phases, the small twist angle (2o) sample had conventional 2π and anomalous π Berry's phase depending on carrier density.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of canine influenza (CI) infection in pet dogs and canine parvovirus (CPV) infection in street dogs of different age and sex by collecting rectal and nasal swab samples from three districts, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sirajgonj, in Bangladesh using a RapiGEN® Canine Influenza Virus Ag Test kit and RapiGEN® Canine Parvovirus Ag Test Kit. Out of 114 rectal swabs and 115 nasal swab samples, the overall prevalence of CI and CPV was found to be 11.30% and 32.45%, respectively. The prevalence of parvovirus infection was found to be significantly higher in puppies and dogs 6 months of age (50.0%) than those > 24 months of age (p = 0.005). The prevalence was also higher in males (34.42%) than females (30.18%). The prevalence of CI was higher (30.43%) in dogs up to 6 months of age (p = 0.011) than 6-12 month (7.93%) and 12-18 month (6.66%) old dogs. Moreover, the prevalence of CI was found to be higher in males (16.10%) than females (5.66%). The prevalence of CPV infection also varied significantly in different study areas (p = 0.0029), with 12.72%, 12.5% and 7.14% of dogs found to be CI positive in Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sirajgonj, respectively. Overall, the highest prevalence of CI was found in local breeds (6.08%) followed by German shepherds and Keeshonds (1.73%), and Bloodhounds and Terriers (0.86%). Additionally, there were more positive CI found in unvaccinated dogs (14.81%) than vaccinated (2.94%) dogs. Dogs with flu-like symptoms were more positive (19.23%) for CI relative to those without flu-like symptoms (4.76%) samples. Overall, the results of this study indicate that canine vaccination should be initiated to prevent the occurrence of diseases and that regular monitoring should be continued in Bangladesh.

The paraneoplastic neurologic disorders target several families of neuron-specific RNA binding proteins (RNABPs), revealing that there are unique aspects of gene expression regulation in the mammalian brain. Here, we used HITS-CLIP to determine robust binding sites targeted by the neuronal Elav-like (nElavl) RNABPs. Surprisingly, nElav protein binds preferentially to GU-rich sequences in vivo and in vitro, with secondary binding to AU-rich sequences. nElavl null mice were used to validate the consequence of these binding events in the brain, demonstrating that they bind intronic sequences in a position dependent manner to regulate alternative splicing and to 3'UTR sequences to regulate mRNA levels. These controls converge on the glutamate synthesis pathway in neurons; nElavl proteins are required to maintain neurotransmitter glutamate levels, and the lack of nElavl leads to spontaneous epileptic seizure activity. The genome-wide analysis of nElavl targets reveals that one function of neuron-specific RNABPs is to control excitation-inhibition balance in the brain. Video Abstract:
