      • Genetic Variants in ASCT2 Gene are Associated with the Prognosis of Transarterial Chemoembolisation-Treated Early-Stage Hepatocelluar Carcinoma

        Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide. Transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is the standardized therapy for intermediate stage HCC. However, the prognosis for HCC patients treated by TACE greatly varies. Thus, there is a critical need for finding biomarkers to predict the prognosis of HCC patients. The amino acid transporter-2 (ASCT2) is involved in tumorigenesis and progression of many malignancies. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive role of two single nuclear polymorphisms (SNPs, rs3826793 and rs2070246) in the ASCT2 gene in HCC patients treated by TACE. Materials and Methods: Two functional SNPs (rs3826793 and rs2070246) in the ASCT2 gene were selected and genotyped using the Sequenom iPLEX genotyping system in a cohort of 448 unresectable Chinese HCC patients treated by TACE. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models and Kaplan-Meier curves were used for the prognosis analyses. Results: There was no significant association between two SNPs (rs3826793 and rs2070246) in the ASCT2 gene and overall survival of TACE treated HCC patients. However, we demonstrated that patients with early stage HCC carrying T genotype in rs2070246 showed better OS than those carrying CC genotype (P=0.023). Conclusions: We demonstrated that patients with early stage HCC carrying T genotype in rs2070246 showed better OS than those carrying CC genotype.

        Lyapunov Conditions for Finite-time Stability of Stochastic Functional Systems

        In this study, we consider the finite time stability (FTS) and finite time contractive stability (FTCS) of the stochastic functional systems. For the framework of Lyapunov-Ruzumikhin method, the sufficient conditions of FTS and FTCS are given first. Then the theory is applied to FTS and FTCS of linear time-varying stochastic functional systems. Finally, experiments on the numerical examples have demonstrated the superiority of the proposed method.

        Epigallocatechin-3-O-Gallate Protects Against Hepatic Damage and Testicular Toxicity in Male Mice Exposed to Di-(2-Ethylhexyl) Phthalate

        The aim of this study was to examine the effects of epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG) on hepatic damage and testicular toxicity in male mice exposed to daily oral administration of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). A mouse model was used to assess the effects of daily intraperitoneal EGCG injection on hepatic and testicular damage. Histological and mitochondrial membrane potential results revealed that EGCG treatment significantly arrested the progression of hepatic damage. EGCG treatment resulted in significant suppression of liver injury (i.e., reduced activities of alanine aminotransferase [ALT] and aspartate aminotransferase [AST]). The development of DEHP-induced hepatic and testicular damage altered thetestosterone concentration in mouse serum, which could affect the reproductive ability of male mice. Moreover, EGCG treatment markedly attenuated testes lesions, sperm deformity, and spermatogenic cell apoptosis. At the molecular level, hepatic CYP3A4 expression was substantially reduced by EGCG treatment in mice exposed to DEHP compounds, whereas testicular aromatase expression was increased significantly in testes. Thus, these results demonstrate that EGCG administration may protect against liver damage and reproductive toxicity in males exposed to DEHP.

        Effect of Primary Holes Structure on Flow Characteristic and Combustion Performance of High Temperature Rise Combustor Based on RQL

        To meet the qualification of temperature rise and reduce emissions, a high temperature rise combustor which is based on RQL (rich-burn/quick-quench/lean-burn) under different primary holes structure had been used to investigate the flow characteristic and combustion performance. The flow field was measured by PIV (particle imaging velocimetry) under different primary holes structure at normal temperature and pressure, and the combustion and emissions performances were simulated under the same conditions in this paper. The results show that the flow field, the airflow mixing effectiveness in the quench zone airflow, the distribution of temperature, the emission and the combustion efficiency change obviously with the primary holes structure. The maximum central recirculation zone height with staggered structure (Case-II) is about 23% higher than that with symmetrical structure. The central recirculation zone length is reduced by 36% and the velocity gradient in the rich zone is increased when the primary holes structure is symmetrical with three holes (Case-I). The insufficient penetration of primary jets has a negative impact to the efficient mixing of the quench zone airflow. Therefore, the symmetrical structure of primary holes is used, increasing the number of holes while reducing the area of single-hole will have a negative impact on the efficient mixing of the quench zone airflow. In addition, when the primary holes structure is symmetrical with four holes (Case-III), the combustion efficiency was reduced by 0.07% and 0.03%, and the maximum emission index of NO was increased by 14% and 19%, respectively, compared with the Case-I and Case-II. On the contrary, the maximum emission index of CO and soot were reduced in rich zone.

      • Multidisciplinary Collaborative Therapy for 30 Children with Orbital Rhabdomyosarcoma

        Objective: To explore clinical experience and propose new ideas for treating children diagnosed with orbital rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data for30 patients (16 males and 14 females, with a median age of 6.2 years) with primary orbital RMS who were enrolled in the Department of Eye Oncology and Pediatrics of our hospital from November 2004 to December 2012. International Rhabdomyosarcoma Organization Staging Standards indicated that among the 30 patients, 4 cases were in phase II, 20 were in phase III, and 6 were in phase IV. All patients underwent a multidisciplinary collaborative model of comprehensive treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, external radiotherapy, $^{125}I$ radioactive particle implantation, and autologous peripheral blood stem-cell transplantation). Results: Follow-up was conducted until March 2013, with a median follow-up time of 47.2 months (5 to 95 months), and 7 deaths occurred. The 2-year estimated survival rate reached 86.1%, the ${\geq}3$-year estimated survival rate was 77%, and the 5-year estimated survival rate was 70.6%. Conclusions: The multidisciplinary collaborative model can be a safe and effective approach to the comprehensive treatment of children with orbital RMS. It has clinical significance in improving the tumor remission rate.

        Structural and Ferromagnetic Properties SnO2/TiO2 Nanotubes Obtained by Electrospinning

        SnO2/TiO2 (Sn/Ti = 5/1) nanotubes were prepared by the electrospinning method. The morphology was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results showed that the inner diameter of prepared materials was about 100 nm and the wall thickness was about 10 nm. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) showed that SnO2/TiO2 nanotubes had a mixed phase of SnO2 rutile and TiO2 anatase structures and no impurity phases. The magnetic properties of the SnO2/TiO2 nanotubes were characterized by a superconducting quantum interferometer (SQUID). The results indicated that the samples exhibited room temperature ferromagnetism which may be attributed to the interface between TiO2 and SnO2 phases.

        Color Prediction for Pre-Colored Cotton Fiber Blends Based on Improved Kubelka-Munk Double-Constant Theory

        The accuracy of color prediction results for pre-colored fiber blends is critical in the textile industry. In this paper,we attempt to investigate a feasible method for predicting the color of pre-colored fibers blends. Five pre-colored cottonfibers were divided into two groups, one for achromatic primaries (white and black) and one for chromatic primaries (red,blue, and yellow). Their respective absorption coefficient (K) and scattering coefficient (S) were calculated by the leastsquares method from the prepared fiber blends samples. The color information of the 34 test blending samples including twoprimaryand three-primary was predicted by the improved Kubelka-Munk (K-M) double-constant theory. Comparing withthe measurement results, the minimum and maximum DE00 color differences were 0.215 and 1.890. The variance of colordifference for two-primary samples was 0.128 and for three-primary samples was 0.154, both were smaller than that obtainedby the K-M theory relative value method, the Stearns-Noechel (S-N) model, revised S-N models, and the Friele model. Theresults show that the improved K-M double-constant theory can be used to better predict the color blending effect of precoloredfibers.

        In the viewpoint of engineering, materials problem is a key problem, which determines whether the exploitation of fusion energy will be success. The most important class of fusion materials is plasma-facing materials (PFM). W, as high Z high melting-point metal is one of the most important candidate materials due to its high plasma erosion resistance. Improving the ductility of W and W based alloy, lowering its ductile-brittleness transition temperature for meeting the requirements of fusion application is an important task. In this paper, severalpowder meatllurgy methods of fabricating W and W based materials are being investigated.

      • Aberrant Methylation of the 1p36 Tumor Suppressor Gene RIZ1 in Renal Cell Carcinoma

        Background: Retinoblastoma protein-interacting zinc finger gene 1(RIZ1) functions as a tumor suppressor. Hypermethylation-mediated RIZ1 silencing has been reported in several cancers, but not in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) yet. Materials and Methods: We examined the RIZ1 expression and methylation in a panel of RCC cell lines and 50 primary tumors using semiquantitative/quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), methylation specific PCR, and bisulfite sequencing genomic. We also explored the relationship between methylation status of RIZ1 and clinicopathological features in RCC patients. Results: RIZ1 expression was down-regulated or lost in OS-RC-2, 769-P, Caki-1, 786-O and A498 RCC cell lines. Restored expression of RIZ1 was detected after addition of 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine with/without trichostatin A, suggesting that DNA methylation directly mediates its silencing. The RIZ1 expression was significantly reduced in RCCs compared to adjacent non-malignant renal samples (P<0.001). Aberrant methylation was detected in 15 of 50 (30%) RCCs and in 2 of 28 (7%) adjacent non-malignant renal samples (P=0.02). No statistically significant correlation between methylated and unmethylated cases with regard to age, gender, pathological stage and grade was observed. Conclusions: RIZ1 expression is down-regulated in human RCC, and this down-regulation is associated with methylation. RIZ1 methylation may play a role in renal carcinogenesis.
