      • Understanding United States Appreciation of Tea Drinking

( Babette Donaldson ) 원광대학교 한국예다학연구소 2017 한국예다학 Vol.4 No.-

The extraordinary global history of tea provides a lens through which we can better understand the entire world`s cultural differences and, more importantly, the traditions and values that are similar. The worldwide culture of tea exemplifies the foundations of civilized human society. While Western Europe and the United States share political, economic and tea history that are entertained and similar, there are some subtle and surprising differences. British author, George Orwell, said in his book, Smothered Under Journalism that, “Tea is one of the main stays of civilization in this country.” Quite the opposite is true in the United States. In fact, most Americans are completely unaware of their own rich tea history and habits and generally think of their beverage identity as a coffee culture. There is often an assumption that all Western tea habits originated with the British and other Western practices were then imitations. This is not true. There is a shared history of tea being imported to both continents at approximately the same time by the same traders. The Dutch East India Company had a monopoly on the spice trade from Asia. This included tea and many other exotic trade items. It was their limited understanding of tea customs and their marketing to the rest of the world that informed the way the West embraced the new tea and the way it was used. This was during the mid-1600`s which also marked the end of the Chinese Ming Dynasty and the transition to the Qing Dynasty. Some of the differences in the development of Western traditions can be attributed to the personalities of those who were drawn to adventure in the New Land of North America in contrast to the Europeans who remained at home. There was the allure of freedom, power and wealth and the challenges of settling a wilderness. There were complex issues relating to the indigenous tribal residents. These early European immigrants certainly felt a strong desire to break with old social rules and restrictions and confidence in their strength to overcome adverse conditions. We cannot explore the differences between these two Western tea cultures by the choice of tea or style of equipage or brewing methods as we might study the differences between East and West. Instead, we must first consider the different nature of the people settled the New Land in contrast to those who remained in their homeland. One striking similarity is how tea drinking symbolically expresses polite behavior, elegance and sophistication. All Westerners associate tea with conversation and relaxation - taking a break from the rigors of daily life. We see this in the paintings and in the literature of both continents. So, it is interesting that tea has also been the trigger of rebellion and economic conflict on several occasions. We can say that Camellia sinensis has divided nations as much as it has brought them together.
