『동물해방』으로 세상에 널리 알려지게 된 피터 싱어는 이익 동등 고려의 원리 또는 선호 공리주의를 도덕 판단의 궁극적인 기준으로 삼아 이를 현실 문제에 일관되게 적용하고 있는 철학자다. 이와 같이 공리주의 원리를 적용함으로써 그는 동물에게 일정한 도덕적 지위를 부여할 수 있었고, 빈곤의 문제에 더욱 적극적인 관심을 촉발해 낼 수 있었다. 하지만 인간의 생명 문제에 대해서는 우리의 기존 관념을 다소 벗어나 일부 인간의 낙태와 안락사를 사실상 허용하는 입장을 취함으로써 사람들의 비난을 사기도 했다. 한편 그는 이익 동등 고려의 원리가 진리임을 보이기 위해 규범 윤리학적인 노력 외에 진화론적 사실을 이용하기도 하는데, 이는 그가 다양한 현실 문제에 이러한 원칙을 적용하는 것에 정당성을 부여하기 위한 노력의 일환이라 할 것이다. 이밖에 그는 사유를 바탕으로 한 실천을 지향하는 실천적 윤리학자로서의 면모를 보이는데, 이 모두는 일관성이라는 틀 속에서 유기적 구조를 이루고 있다. 이 글에서 필자는 이익 동등 고려의 원리가 궁극적인 선택 기준으로서의 자격을 갖추고 있음을 보여주기 위한 싱어의 노력, 그리고 이러한 원리를 일관성 있게 현실 문제에 적용하고자 하는 싱어의 구체적인 입장을 정리하고 있다. Peter Singer is philosopher who utilizes preference utilitarianism or the principle of equal consideration of interests as an ultimate standard of moral judgment. He consistently applies it to the various problems of reality. By applying the principle of utilitarianism, he could grant moral status to the animals, and touch off more positive concern to the poor. However, he was on the side of allowing abortion and euthanasia and criticized for deviating from our common sense. By the way, he uses evolutionary fact as well as normative ethics to show the principle of equal consideration of interests is truth. This is to justify the application of this principle to the various problem of reality. Singer also shows practical aspect as an philosopher. All these show organic harmony in the frame of consistency. In this essay, I tried to describe Singer"s effort of showing the competence of principle of equal consideration of interests as an ultimate principle of moral judgment. I also sum up concrete attitude of Singer"s effort of consistently applying this principle to the problems of reality.
