Bilingual Dictionary Use and Incidental Lexical Acquisition in Korean EFL Reading
김준기 한국영미어문학회 2009 영미어문학 Vol.- No.93
This study compared the effectiveness of two approaches for achieving incidental L2 vocabulary learning through reading. Thirty Korean university students were randomly assigned to one of two reading conditions in which they read a short story in English. The treatment condition allowed the use of dictionaries, so that unfamiliar words could be looked up. The control group had no access to dictionaries, and were expected to guess from context the meanings of unknown words. The reading task was preceded by a pretest on target lexis items from the story, and followed by a surprise vocabulary posttest. The results indicated that: a) a significant level of overall vocabulary learning took place during reading; b) no statistically significant difference existed between the dictionary and context-only conditions.

조은영,이만홍,김준기 大韓神經精神醫學會 1991 신경정신의학 Vol.30 No.2
Using the short form of Defining Issue Test(DIT) compiled by Rest in 1979, this study was undertaken to compare the stages of the moral development in the premedical freshman, the medical sophomore, the medical senior, the non-medical freshman and the non-medical senior. The number of subjects were 609 in total, that is 300 medical students and 309 non-medical students all from a same university. The following results were obtained using the computer analysis. 1) There was a significant difference(P〈0.05) for grade and college in some stages of the moral development between the groups. However, there was no difference for sex, age, sibling rank, residental area and religion. 2) In the medical students, the moral developmental stage 2, 3 score were decreased and the stage 4, 5, 6 scores were increased by the increasing grade. The A scores was decreased by the increasing grade in a college. This tendency was also noted in the non-medical students. 3) The medical sophomores showed a specific moral stage profile that was different from the non-medical seniors. This finding was thought to be due to the specific environment of the medical sophomores. 4) The PM score(10.05) of the medical seniors were lower than that(10.30) of the medical sophomores while stage 4 score of medical seniors(8.24) was higher than that(5.86) of medical sophomores. This finding showed that the medical seniors were more oriented towards conventional morality rather than postconventional morality. 5) From the result of two-way ANOVA, there was a significant difference in college by stage 2 score and in grade by stage 4 score or A score.

Modality is used to represent a speaker's subjective opinion or attitude such as volition, possibility, necessity, permission, inference, obligation, ability, etc. Modal auxiliaries (henceforth, medals) play the most important part in representing modality. They are used in epistemic and deontic usages. When modals are used in epistemic usage, they represent the meaning of possibility, necessity, probability, etc. When modals are used in deontic usage, they represent the meaning of ability, permission, volition, order, and obligation. The main purpose of this study is to examine the appropriateness of choosing English newspapers as authentic materials for teaching the concept of modality in English to students and to assess educational implications. The importance of this study is that teachers should make learners understand the basic meanings of medal auxiliaries regardless of a variety of Englishes just rather than provide various authentic materials which does not reflect on the appropriate uses of English modals.
