      • The representation of the Brazilian Indian in literature and cinema from Hans Staden to the indigenous media

Prata, Monica Nadler The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 2002 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247615

The present work undertakes the representation of the Brazilian Indian in literature and cinema beginning with the travel narratives from the sixteenth century to the indigenous media in the late decades of the twentieth century. The image of the first inhabitants of Brazil carry contradictory meanings, varying from the most amicable to the most savage in the travel accounts: Duas Viagens by Hans Staden (1557); Viagem à terra do Brasil by Jean de Léry (1578), and in their adaptations to the cinema: Como era gostoso o meu francês (1972), by Nelson Pereira dos Santos and Hans Staden (1999), by Luís Alberto Pereira. The nineteenth century novel Iracema, lenda do Ceará (1865) by José de Alencar portrays the Indian as a symbol of national identity. One hundred years later, the Indian becomes an outcast in the short-story “Hoje, como amaña, como depois” from Caminhos and descaminhos (1965) by Bernardo Élis; and in the films: Iracema, uma transamazônica (1974), by Jorge Bodansky and Orlando Senna, and Índia, a filha do sol (1981), by Fábio Barreto. Produced in the last decades of the twentieth century, the films—Raoni (1979) by Jean-Pierre Dutilleux and Luís Carlos Saldanha, and Vídeo nas Aldeias (1989) by Vicent Carelli—present the self-representation of indigenous groups through the use video technologies. The manipulation and appropriation of their own images promotes the reflection of these communities in their distinctive insertion in the national context and, in the new perspective of relationships within the Brazilian state and society.

      • 한국증권시장에서의 모멘텀투자전략과 반전투자전략의 성과

Considerable evidence exists that both contrarian and momentum investment strategies produce excess returns. The work of DeBondt and Thaler (1985) supports that the contrarian strategy produces excess returns. According to their study, after sorting stocks by previous returns, then holding those with the worst prior performance and shorting those with the best prior performance produce positive excess returns. On the other hand, the work of Jegadeesh and Titman (1993) reveals that a momentum strategy produces positive excess returns. After sorting firms by previous returns, then holding those with the best prior performance and shorting those with the worst prior performance yield positive excess returns. There is no direct contradiction in the profitability of both contrarian and momentum investment strategies since contrarian strategies work for a sorting period ranging from 3 to 5 years prior and a similar 3 to 5 years holding period, while momentum strategies typically work for a sorting period ranging from 1 month (or more commonly 3 months) to 12 months and a similar 1 (or 3) to 12 month holding period. The results correlate well with the findings of mean reversion at horizons of around 3 to 5 years and the findings of return continuation for horizons up to 12 months. The profitability of momentum and contrarian investment strategies for stocks listed on the Korean Stock Exchange is investigated. The main empirical findings of the study can be summarized as follows: Momentum portfolios, which entail long positions in past best performing stocks (winners) and short positions in past worst performing stocks (losers), have been proven to yield significant positive profits in the medium term (3–12 months). In contrast, a systematic reversal effect is found when a longer holding period (more than 3 years) is considered. 반전 투자전략과 모멘텀 투자전략이 초과수익률을 발생시킨다는 증거가 존재한다. De Bondt and Thaler

      • A Study on SCO CONTRIBUTIONS TO REGIONAL SECURITY

Monica Ramos Flores HANKUK UNIVERSITY OF FOREIGN STUDIES. Graduate Sch 2014 국내석사

        RANK : 247359

A Study on SCO CONTRIBUTIONS TO REGIONAL SECURITY: Possibilities and Limitations under the Regional Security Complex Theory The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was created in 2001. It is constituted by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Security cooperation is the priority of the organization focused on combating terrorism and narcotrafic. In the last years, the organization has been criticized by its lack of effectiveness in improving regional security based on the inoperability or the low efficiency on conflict solving. Under this situation, to what extent the SCO contributes to improve regional security? This question is addressed under the security regimes theory framework; the final objective of a security regime is to avoid the escalation of conflicts. In order to achieve it, the countries have to adhere to a set of norms or rules and adopt a moderated behavior. The SCO is set as a security regime; the SCO Charter is the constitutive document of the organization, which establishes certain possibilities and limitations for the improvement of regional security. The structure of the organization limits the extent of security improvement. Therefore there are areas where the organization can make contributions to regional security and there are others where the cooperation is not that effective. In the first case, the confidence building, legislation harmonization and cooperation with other agencies are possible contributions to regional security. Regarding limitations, the SCO has to manage new challenges like the lack of policy implementation, the possible enlargement of the organization, and which candidates the member states are going to support as the possible new members, the discussion is centered in India and Pakistan; and Russia and China different views regarding SCO economic agenda. The implications for the global security go from the stability and peace in the region, to promoting multilateral cooperation and, at the same time the SCO could be a model for other regions in conflict. In the case of ROK-SCO, the implications are with SCO as the organization and the promotion of non-proliferation and in a broader context, China-Russia and the Korean Peninsula. There is also a section of the security implications for Mexico.

      • Redefining authoritarianism : surveillance and intelligence gathering in the United States post-9/11

Hsiehm, Monica Korea University 2020 국내석사

        RANK : 247358

Starting from the formation of intelligence and surveillance gathering agencies in the Thomas Jeffersonian Era to the Post 9/11 environment that we live in now, there long has been the debate of privacy vs security. The nature of surveillance directly impacts personal privacy and how people view liberal democratic governments and authoritarian governments. The importance of personal privacy and the extent to which the government can infringe on it is important, especially as we continue to improve and integrate new technologies that have the ability to access our personal lives. The existing literature on authoritarianism confirms that governments become more authoritarian with an increase in surveillance. This thesis argues that it is essential to redefine the concept of authoritarianism in the modern international setting in response to the increased privatization increased privatization and transnational approach to surveillance. It will be conceptualized and take into account of the outsourcing of surveillance by allied nations and foreign corporations as examples of the change in surveillance. This thesis will pursue the following questions; can the government infringe on personal freedoms and privacy? What laws and policies can be utilized by the state to control its own citizens with the data gathered? What loopholes could be explored with the cooperative nature of private corporations and the United States government?

      • Development of 3-dimensional printing techniques using hydrogel : stimuli-sensitive fabrication and biomedical application

Ratri, Monica Cahyaning 서강대학교 대학원 2022 국내박사

        RANK : 247358

Nature is the source of inspiration in mimicking structure and motions for several functions. Nature-based structure and motion have been developed for a soft actuator, tissue engineering, biodevices, and wound healing. Consideration in material and fabrication method selection plays an important role. Biocompatibility, biodegradability, and mechanical properties of the material are essential as the fabrication method depending on the purposes. The 3-dimensional (3D) printing fabrication strategy is one of the most suitable fabrication strategies for multi-purposes. Compared with the traditional molding process for 3D fabrication, the 3D printing strategy is faster and more effective, it only needs one-step fabrication, and internal fabrication is also possible. There are several 3D printing strategies, for instance, inkjet, extrusion-based laser-assisted-based, and stereolithography-based printing. The specific printing strategy will be suitable for specific purposes. The combination of unique material with special characteristics and 3D printing strategy could be used to fabricate external stimuli soft robotic. Combining diffusive crosslink strategy, a particular material, and 3D printing strategy make 3D hollow structure is possible to be fabricated. The advanced combination between material and fabrication processes offers new opportunities and challenges in the soft robotic and tissue engineering fields. Herein, the recent materials, 3D fabrication strategies, application of 3D printing strategies in soft robotic and tissue engineering are discussed.

      • (The) configuration of middle power in South Korea's foreign policy

Jeong, Monica Sooyul Korea University 2018 국내박사

        RANK : 247358

The middle power discourse has been proliferated in South Korea’s media and academia since the inception of Lee Myung Bak administration’s Global Korea in 2008. It has become an official foreign policy posture under President Park Geun-hye’s leadership. While there are numerous studies that explain South Korea’s middle power characteristics and roles with the assumption that it is a middle power, there is yet to be an in-depth understanding of why South Korea has chosen to adopt the middle power classification. In order to uncover the actual significance and use of the middle power classification in South Korea’s foreign policy, this research took South Korean leaders’ foreign policy discourses between the years 1948 and 2014, and conducted a discourse analysis relative to South Korea’s environment inside and outside the Korean Peninsula. The findings indicate that the underlying significance of South Korea’s middle power classification operates in a social environment comprised of the dominant and less dominant countries. By identifying ‘self’ as a ‘middle power,’ South Korea seeks to gently balance and neutralize the asymmetrical relationships and thereby, create its complex environment more conducive for its interests, including the removal of its long-ingrained victim mindset. Therefore, South Korea’s middle power position should not be generalized by the conventional connotations of its increased capacity and greater responsibilities in the world. Instead, it requires an analysis of discourse that can analyze and explain the inseparable relationship the middle power classification has with ideology and power distribution.
