        A Main Concepts Analysis of Gravity and Geomagnetics of Earth Science Textbooks in High School Yang, Inn-Suk Department of Earth Science, Graduate School Busan National University Supervised by professor Kim, Sang-dal, Ph. D. Abstract This study is focused on the main concepts of gravity and geomagnetics which are introduced in the earth science textbooks of high school in 7th curriculum. This study examines the validity and accuracy of the Earth Science textbooks and shows some effective teaching plans by using the latest materials. This study also illustrates the main concepts of gravity and geomagnetics through presenting some effective and practical teaching-learning methods. The results of the study were as follows: First of all, a number of main concepts of six textbooks of high school were selected; the field of gravity, the direction and dimension of gravity, the measurement of gravity, the main reason of gravity anomaly and geoid, earth terrestrial magnetic field, secular variation of goemagnetics. Secondly, most Earth Science textbooks of high school explains the main concepts of the gravity and geomagnetics in similar ways. Those textbooks, however, don't put an emphasis on the essential contents which has been regarded as important thing in terms of the current educational course of study. The high school textbooks also use the material which is too old-fashioned and has some problems of accuracy and validity. Especially, many main concepts of the textbooks and scientific data(such as the direction of gravity, the measurement of gravity, the main reason of gravity anomaly, the use of geoid, secular variation) are different with those of South Korea, In addition, some materials(graphs and diagrams) are very old ones and they don't have authentic information. Finally, Among the various main concepts, some important ideas (the direction of the gravity and the method of measuring gravity, the measurement and use of gravity anomaly, the definition of geoid and secular variation of geomagnetics) should be corrected by showing the latest and authentic materials. On the basis of this study, students will feel more comfortable and have interest if they can study Earth Science with more authentic diagrams, graphs and various picture materials which are based on our own nation's data.

      • When all is said and done : 말하고 행해질 때: 이해도에 대한 인지적 접근 : A Cognitive Approach to Intelligibility

        Pronunciation is central to intelligibility and yet omitted from curriculums in South Korean university EFL courses. Research in this area shows there are benefits from direct instruction Saalfield (2011). This study explores the use of the cognitive linguistics concepts figure and ground in pronunciation instruction to aid segmental improvement in learner production and awareness. Ninety six Korean freshmen participated in the study. Fifty nine learners received the Figure-Ground treatment administered over a semester. Nineteen learners in a suprasegmental group received a commercially available suprasegmental curriculum and eighteen learners in the control group follow the standard curriculum with no pronunciation instruction. Pre- and post-test measures were conducted to ascertain differences in performance between groups. Learners participated in 3 forms of assessment, controlled sentence production (CSP), spontaneous task production (STP) and a student self-assessment questionnaire (SSAQ). A two level treatment grounded in the cognitive concepts attention, awareness, and noticing form the basis for activities. The results show an increase in learner awareness and production in both the CSP and STP. A student self-assessment questionnaire depicts attitudes and beliefs of participants to provide a more holistic view of awareness and production and any further changes in attitudes. 발음은 이해도에 있어서 필수적 요소이지만, 한국의 영어 교육에서 그 중요성이 간과되어 왔다. 이 분야의 많은 연구들이 직접적인 지시에서 오는 장점들이 있다는 것을 보여준다(Saafield,2011). 본 연구는 인식론적 언어의 개념의 사용에 대해 탐구하고 학습자의 이해와 수행을 위한 분절 향상(segmental improvement)을 돕기 위해 발음 지도(pronunciation instruction)를 도입하였다. 96명의 한국인 대학교 신입생들이 연구에 참여했다. 그 중 56명의 학습자들은 한 학기동안 설계된 전경 및 배경(Figure-Ground treatment)를 받았다. 그리고 초분절 (suprasegmental)그룹의 19명의 학습자들은 초분절적인 통제를 받았고 통제 그룹의 18명의 학습자들은 발음지시가 없는 표준 교육과정을 따랐다. 두 그룹의 수행도 차이를 알아내기 위해 학습 전,후에 평가가 진행되었다. 학습자들은 3가지 형태의 평가에 참여하였는데, Controlled sentence production(CSP), spontaneous task production(STP), 그리고 student self-assessment questionnaire(SSAQ)이다. 인지개념, 인식, 이해에 담겨 있는 두 가지 단계의 접근이 그 평가활동들의 기초가 되었다.

      • (The) spratly Islands dispute : a comparative perspective between China and Vietnam

        This thesis discusses the Spratly Islands disputes via the comparative perspective between China and Vietnam. The core-focused claimant parties of the dispute in this thesis are China and Vietnam as these two countries have the similar claims over the Spratly Islands with the basis of historical title. As it is essential to understand the underlying factor of the contest between China and Vietnam over the Spratly Islands, the origin of the dispute was discussed. The claims of both China and Vietnam were also examined and compared. This thesis employed descriptive-qualitative research with the data and sources mostly collected from the published books and academic writings. The major finding for this thesis is the contradictions of the both Chinese and Vietnamese claims. With the evidences found from several ancient maps, the weaknesses of both claims were identified and analyzed. The legalistic approach was employed for the writing of this thesis. In conjunction with this, the role and the application of International Law is the fundamental approach to understand the legal basis of the both Chinese and Vietnamese claims. Thus, both of the Chinese and Vietnamese claims were analyzed via the applicable International Law in this thesis. On the other hand, the “Three-C Approach” was proposed in this thesis as the alternative to the pacific settlement of the Spratly Islands dispute.

      • Development of planar patch clamp with potentiometric calcium ion-selective electrode

        Ion channels are proteins in cell lipid bilayer membranes and act as pores which can adopt closed and open states, thus gating the flow of ions in and out of the cell. Patch clamp technology has been the proven standard for fundamental studies of ion channel activities. However, the technique has some basic limitations: low throughput, time consuming nature of its process, need of highly skilled personnel and inability to identify ionic composition of electrophysiological events. Many different materials and fabrication methods have been introduced to replace traditional patch clamp setup to overcome limitations. In this dissertation, a planar patch clamp device with calcium ion-selective electrode is developed in miniaturized form for high throughput cell electrophysiology, and screening of ion channel modulators as potential drug targets in an in vitro format. Femtosecond laser-drilling technique is newly introduced to fabricate the patch-pore and new design of planar ion-selective electrode is suggested for calcium ion measurement. By integrating a standard patch clamp electrophysiological interface with calcium ion-selective electrode on a single platform, it is possible to directly identify the ionic component of a whole-cell potential recording. This system is innovative because the focus is not entirely on increasing experimental throughput, but instead offers information on user specified target ion activities through ion channels.
