      • Sports information directors and the don't ask, don't tell narrative: Applying gatekeeping theory to the creation and contents of Division I women's basketball online coaching biographies

Calhoun, Austin Stair University of Minnesota 2014 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247359

Researchers suggest that gay and lesbian coaches often respond with silence regarding their sexual orientation or family dynamic (Anderson, 2005; Griffin, 1998). Scholars speculate as to why this silence exists from two antipodal approaches: self-policing and institutionalized policing (Krane & Kauer, 2013; Norman, 2011). While we know that coaches respond with silence narratives (i.e., don't tell) when it comes to same-sex family narratives (Calhoun, LaVoi, & Johnson, 2011), it is unclear what dialogues (i.e., don't ask) occur between sports information directors (SIDs) and coaches with regard to including same-sex family narratives in online coaching biographies. Using Gatekeeping Theory (Shoemaker & Vos, 2009) as a guide, I examine the routines of BCS Division I women's basketball SIDs and investigate how the construction of online coaching biographies contributes to the absence of same-sex family narratives. The results from semi-structured interviews with SIDs (n = 14) provide insight on processes and dialogues between coaches and SIDs. Major findings were trifold: (1) SIDs presented similar communication routines when creating online coaching biographies, (2) each level of Gatekeeping Theory was reflected the content in online coaching biographies, and (3) SIDs explained the absence of same-sex narratives by placing the blame elsewhere and absolving themselves. This research has the potential to affect stakeholders and constituents in the sport and LBGT communities. Future research should address how SIDs can neutralize their routines and offer opportunities for inclusion of same-sex family narratives in online coaching biographies.

      • Last Gamble on a Dream The Rhee-Eisenhower Summit Conference July 26th - July 31st, 1954

CALHOUN, ANDREW DAVID 연세대학교 국제학대학원 2007 국내석사

        RANK : 247359

This thesis endeavours to shed light upon the Syngman Rhee - Dwight D. Eisenhower summit conference which took place in late July, 1954. The exchanges that transpired between these two heads of state have not been satisfactorily explained within the existing literature on the history of Korean-American diplomatic relations, nor have the implications of the high-level talks been adequately explored with respect to the study of international relations. This academic lacuna exists in part because the events in question took place between the traumatic Korean War and the rapid economic development known as the 'Miracle on the Han River,' two subjects that have garnered far more interest from both academics and the general public. However, part of the blame must also be placed on the lack of primary source material available in the decades following the fall of Korea's so-called First Republic; it was not until the turn of the twenty-first century that the invaluable Syngman Rhee Presidential Papers were catalogued in the Yonsei Library and made available to the public. As such, this paper will utilize the Syngman Rhee documents as well as contemporary American documents to analyze how the Republic of Korea and the United States each pursued their diplomatic goals during this time period. The principal event that will be highlighted in this thesis is President Syngman Rhee's visit to Washington, D.C. at the end of July 1954. Particular emphasis will be placed on his controversial speech to a joint session of Congress and the four-high level diplomatic meetings that took place at the White House. It will be argued that the Korean president's visit to the United States was a critical turning point in the diplomatic relationship between the two countries in that it clarified the foreign policy positions of each side and allowed for constructive negotiations for an Agreed Minute of Understanding to take place in the months following.Furthermore, an analysis of the late 1954 Korean-American diplomatic relations as a whole will reveal two general features consistent throughout the period. First, a gap existed between the Eisenhower administration's foreign policy rhetoric and its actual intentions. This gap proved to be a significant hindrance to smooth relations between the two countries prior to Rhee's visit to Washington. After July, however, Rhee's clearer understanding of America's foreign policy intentions allowed both sides to move forward towards the signing of the Agreed Minute of Understanding and the ratification of the Mutual Defense Treaty. Second, it is evident that Syngman Rhee's dominating personality was an ever-present factor in diplomatic exchanges. The Korean president consistently demonstrated that he was not shackled or restrained by his own administration and often acted independently without seeking advice from his 'diplomatic experts.' This resulted in an American recognition of Rhee's unpredictability, and as such, United States officials found themselves reacting to Rhee rather than proactively controlling their recalcitrant ally. Historically speaking, this is a prime example of the powerful role that an individual can play in international relations. With this in mind, it is hoped that this thesis will bring about a better understanding of Korean-American relations during the post-Korean War period, as well as provide insight into some fundamental international relations issues.

      • Electrochemistry and electrogenerated chemiluminescence of Ru(phen)(2)dppz fluoborate both free and intercalated into DNA

Calhoun, Robert Lee, Jr The University of Texas at Austin 2007 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

Ruthenium (II) bisphenanthroline dipyridophenazine, Ru(phen) 2dppz2+, exhibits first oxidation and reduction voltammetric responses which correlate well with the UV-vis spectroscopy and are typical to the compound class. The complex proves energy sufficient for electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL), and does so in aqueous media with co-reactants, also similar to its phenanthroline and bipyridine analogues. However, this behavior is curious since this compound's aqueous photoluminescence (PL) is undetectable but exhibits 'light switch' behavior upon intercalation into both calf thymus DNA and other polynucleotides in that the PL greatly increases. The ECL of both the free and intercalated complex is presented as well as scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) studies to understand the complex's kinetic behavior in water upon oxidation. In an effort to understand the SECM results, the program COMSOL Multiphysics is used to model the EC' (catalytic) following reaction. The simulation results are validated using the ferrocyanide/cysteine system, which is known to exhibit the EC' mechanism.

      • Body habitus changes, metabolic abnormalities, and subclinical coronary atherosclerosis associated with long-term antiretroviral therapy

Calhoun, Bridget Colleen University of Pittsburgh 2008 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

The public health significance of this work reflects the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the growing concerns of long-term consequences of antiretroviral therapy. The advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has greatly improved survival among those with HIV-infection. As a corollary, clinicians and researchers face a range of long-term complications previously of little importance to HIV-infected patients. HIV-associated lipodystrophy syndrome (HIV-LS) was first described in 1998 and involves a constellation of metabolic and morphologic abnormalities. Whereas AIDS wasting syndrome has been associated with immunosuppression and high viral burden, HIV-LS has been documented with immunocompetence and suppressed viral concentration. Participants of the local site of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS) consented to photography of their lipodystrophic body habitus changes during routine clinic appointments. The compilation of these photographs was used to develop a manual for clinicians at all four of the MACS sites in order to accurately document the syndrome, and permitted initial classification of HIV-LS into two phenotypes. A third phenotype was identified following a preliminary observation of lipoaccumulation extending bilaterally and symmetrically from the breasts laterally into the axilla. Additional cases were subsequently identified within the MACS; all subjects had pre-existing lipoaccumulation of at least one other anatomical site. It was speculated as to whether this represented a previously unrecognized evolution of HIV-LS. Our next project involved studying the health related quality of life (HRQL) of men with HIV-LS. We found HIV-LS does not negatively affect HRQL or exacerbate depressive symptoms above and beyond the diagnosis of HIV-infection. The metabolic abnormalities of HIV-LS include insulin resistance and dyslipidemia, both of which are considered pro-atherogenic risks. The final segment of this project involved detecting coronary artery calcification via electron beam computed tomography among HIV-infected men treated with HAART. In this male population with well controlled HIV-infection, chronic use of HAART did not impact the progression of subclinical coronary atherosclerosis. In contrast, traditional atherosclerosis risk factors of smoking and advancing age were predictive of coronary atherosclerosis. HIV-infection requires life-long combination treatment. Clinicians, researchers and patients recognize dyslipidemia, peripheral lipoatrophy and central lipohypertrophy as significant consequences of this combination therapy, and hope that concerns regarding increasing cardiac risk are not warranted.

      • Limit theory for overfit models

Calhoun, Grayson Ford University of California, San Diego 2009 해외공개박사

        RANK : 247343

This dissertation consists of three independent papers. Collectively they attempt to formalize a notion of model "overfit" -- the idea that a large econometric model can appear to fit a particular dataset well simply because it is large. This behavior is modeled by using asymptotic approximations that allow the number of regressors in a linear regression model to increase with the number of total observations. The first chapter looks at the behavior of the F-test under this asymptotic theory, shows that the F-test is generally invalid for these overfit models, and derives a correction that gives a valid test statistic. The second chapter looks at the behavior of pseudo out-of-sample comparisons of forecasting models under this asymptotic theory, shows that this asymptotic theory resolves some technical issues that lead to nonstandard test statistics, and gives conditions under which standard procedures remain valid for overfit models. The third chapter conducts an empirical comparison of several methods for comparing forecasting models out-of-sample.
