ABSTRACT
This collection of works handles musical pieces of Porter(Cole Alber Porter, 1891-1964), Kander(John Harold Kander, 1927-) and Webber(Andrew Lloyd Webber, 1948-) and vocal music of Mozart (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, 1756-1791) and Schumann(Robert Alexander Schumann, 1810-1856). This study aims to help in playing more deeply by concentrating on composers' entire lives, the original works, characters of the works, situations to sing the songs and the relationship between the songs and the lyrics.
The first composer, Porter's《Kiss me, Kate, 1948》was created, based on Shakespeare(William Shakespeare, 1564-1616)'s play《The taming of the shrew, 1590-1594》. Bill and Lois's duet <Why can't you behave?> highlights the lyrics of the song and character's emotion by repeating the simple melody and similar lyrics.
The second composer, Kander's《Chicago, 1975》was created, based on Watkins(Maurine Dallas Watkins, 1896-1969)' play《A brave little woman, 1926》, and describes the U.S. in the dark ages of the 1920s. Based on this background, the lyrics of the song <Nowadays> can be interpreted to have a double meaning, and the chromatic upward development of the melody and the rhythm of the lyrics give emotions to the words.
The third composer, Webber's《Sunset Boulevard, 1993》was composed, based on the black-and-white film《Sunset Boulevard, 1950》. <With one look> which the actress, Noma tells her glorious past, repeats the 8-bar melody, and the accompaniment makes the song plentiful by playing the melody together, or bringing various changes to it.
The fourth composer, Mozart's opera《Le Nozze di Figaro, 1786》was created, based on the two-part prequel to《Le Mariage de Figaro, 1784》 to Beaumarchais(Pierre-Augustin Beaumarchais, 1732- 1799)' trilogy, and it develops the story quickly, showing the appearance and leave of the characters repeatedly. <Non so più cosa son> sung by Cherubino expresses a teenage boy's flutter and excitement at a girl through the repetition and transformation of the motif and leap of the melody.
The fifth composer, Schumann's《Myrthen, op.25, 1840》consists of 26 songs with that apply the poems of poets as lyrics, and was dedicated to his beloved wife, Clara the night before wedding. The first song <Widmung, Op.25 no.1> is formed with 'A-B-A', and expresses a devout and sublime love by emphasizing the lyrics through the development and leap of the melody.
