This study is about the Little Asia Creators' Meeting(LACM), which is an exchange network of artists and presenters among five countries(South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Australia) of the Asia Pacific region. On February 9th 2007, LACM gave a trial performance 《RIAU》, an atypical art, in Gwangju Arts Center. This showcase was planned as a part of 'Asia Artplex Pilot Project' related to 'Asian Hub-City of Culture Project' by Korea Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Participating in the project as a performer I tied the knot with LACM.
I have been interested in LACM and arts exchange in Asia after I took part in collaboration process, a showcase, open classes, conferences for regional people and regional artists, a forum about collaboration and the present condition of arts exchange in Asia. In addition, I thought that art exchange programs and networks are relatively insufficient comparing to the rapidly increasing demands for the Asian art exchange. For those reasons, I have researched and studied about LACM as a model of an alternative art exchange network in Asia Pacific area.
Surely, LACM is not consist of 'amazing' artists, who are well-known internationally, famous, and proved through a range of awards. But if you recognize the actual situation of the art exchange in Korea and the discriminated system, achievement, trials, ways, and process of LACM, you must convince that the study of LACM is meaningful at this time.
In Korea, the art exchange, particularly in performing arts, is still lean toward Western Europe and America. The art exchange between Asian countries is also limited to only 3 countries, Korea, China and Japan. In addition, most of 'exchanges' have meant just 'invitation and introduction of famous work' and (have been 생략)prepared by the government in the short-term view as a part of national event such as memorial event of amity between countries.
On the other hand, LACM was organized by itself without any public interference and this exchange network has been interested in Asia Pacific area. LACM' members are consist of stage artists in diverse genres such as an actor, a dancer, a director, a sound designer, a video artist, a choreographer, musician and so on. LACM values the process rather than the result, so they have intended to 'usual' exchange without sticking to a product. Therefore, they have tried several workshops, group improvisation, conferences, meetings and so forth since 2003.
Consequently, the purpose of this study is to introduce LACM as an alternative art exchange network between Asian countries not as the 'ideal exchange model to Korean performing art world and to provide Korean art world with a first step for progressive and alternative art exchange through analysis of LACM.
I tried to record concrete materials and practical information regarding the process, activities and trials of LACM. I want to give a guideline to artists or presenters who want to take part in the internal art exchange in Asia.
In this regard, first of all, I examined the necessity of art exchange in connection with a 'globalization', whose meaning is related to a problem of cultural identity and local block. And then I mentioned the present condition of Asian art exchange those needs are artistically and socially increased. Then, I presented the present situation of rapidly growing art exchange in Korean art world, and introduced some cases of art exchange leaded by public section or private section.
Next, I pointed several problems about Asian art exchange in Korean art world, and then introduced and analyzed LACM and 《RIAU》as the alternative art exchange case.
Through these process, I present some proposals for progressive and alternative Asian art exchange finally.
Though much insufficiency, I expect that LACM will play an alternative role in Korean art world. Furthermore, I hope that this study will provide small clues for Korean art world to create alternative Asian art network.
