This paper examines the principle of color development in beautiful leaf tenmoku-glaze made in Gilljuyo, Jiangxi which has not been unveiled yet and made many potters wander about it mysteriously.
The leaves of various trees that grow in Korea were analyzed in their composition, and the most appropriate calcination temperature and method were studied so that anyone can easily reproduce the leaf tenmoku-glaze.
In order to obtain beautiful leaf tenmoku-glaze, the tree leaves need to be collected at appropriate timing and dehydrated so that the shape of the leaf is not disturbed(350℃, 370℃,~ 450℃). Then, the composition, the thickness and the feature of the leaf must be determined, and careful attention needs to be paid to the temperature during the third calcination process. During calcination process, the leaf should be placed between alumina panels to avoid the deformation in the shape of the leaf caused by the direct heat.
Based on the hypothesis that a leaf from a mulberry tree happened to fall on the tenmoku-glaze and became the leaf tenmoku-glaze, attachment of an uncalcinated mulberry leaf on the tenmoku-glaze from the 2nd calcination yielded a leaf tenmoku-glaze that had the exact form of the leaf and the vein. However, not every leaf was colorized in this way, and it is found that a leaf with medium thickness fits the condition for becoming a leaf tenmoku-glaze than those leaves with very light or heavy thickness that have a little more SiO2 content than CaO content.
The mulberry leaves were well expressed even without calcination, but the oak leaves are so thick that they required a higher calcination temperature than 400℃. In the case of the forsythia leaves, they need to be calcinated at 420℃ since they have a high K₂O content and become ashes because they are so thin. Also, the thuja leaves had a high CaO content and were well expressed at any calcination temperature, and their color showed a golden light as the temperature increased. In the case of bamboo leaves, they were shown as if covered with sand in any calcination temperature because SiO₂ forms the major component of the bamboo leaves.
It is found that as to the seasonal conditions, rather than spring, summer, and winter, the leaves collected in the fall right before they are detached from the tree showed the best expression. Namely, the form of the leaf was preserved and more clearly expressed due to the full amount of silicic acid materials contained in the falling leaves.
