This study aims to present practical strategies to ensure the sustainability of startups by analyzing key factors for overcoming the Death Valley. To identify the necessary factors for startups to overcome the Death Valley, previous research was reviewed, and expert opinions were gathered through Delphi surveys. The priorities of the derived factors were analyzed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method.
The study results revealed that the most critical factor for the survival and growth of startups is technological capability, followed by funding ability and management capability. In particular, technological capability and management capability were identified as essential internal resources that positively impact the performance of startups. This emphasizes the importance of startups possessing competitive technological capabilities and continuously enhancing them.
Government policy support was also found to play a crucial role in helping startups overcome the Death Valley. Government funding and systematic policies significantly contribute to increasing the survival rate of startups, providing a foundation for stable growth beyond the initial unstable stages. Therefore, it is imperative for the government to continuously support startups and intensify various policy efforts to improve the startup environment.
Startups need continuous investment in research and development (R&D) to enhance their technological capabilities. This is essential for startups to secure market competitiveness and achieve sustained growth. Technological capability is not just about product development; it plays a vital role in enabling startups to respond quickly to changing market demands and seize new opportunities. To this end, startups must secure the necessary resources for technological development and actively pursue R&D activities.
Furthermore, it is necessary to introduce education and training programs to strengthen the capabilities of management. Management capabilities significantly influence the success of startups, especially during the initial stages where management decisions can determine the survival of the enterprise. Continuous education and training should be provided so that management can stay abreast of the latest management techniques and market trends, and develop effective strategies.
This study provides significant implications for establishing practical strategies to help startups overcome the Death Valley. However, the study has limitations as it was conducted with a limited number of startups and expert panels, which may limit the generalization of the results. Additionally, the study primarily analyzed the independent impacts of each factor, although multiple factors could interact and influence the success of startups. Since startups operate in various environments, the factors not only independently but also interactively play significant roles in sustainability and overcoming the Death Valley. Therefore, future research should take a comprehensive approach by analyzing the interactions between individual factors to achieve a more in-depth understanding and higher-quality research outcomes.
The Delphi survey and AHP analysis were primarily based on quantitative data, thus lacking in reflecting the specific experiences and cases of startups. The Delphi survey identified technological capability, funding ability, and management capability as key factors for overcoming the Death Valley. However, various exceptional situations and complex problems exist in actual startup cases. For instance, some startups, despite having strong technological capabilities, faced difficulties due to market entry failures, while others experienced internal conflicts due to management capability shortcomings. Such qualitative data are essential for a clearer understanding of the actual environment of startups and conducting more in-depth research. Therefore, future research should incorporate qualitative data collection that includes the specific experiences and cases of startups to achieve a deeper understanding.
This study offers crucial insights for formulating strategies that enable startups to overcome the Death Valley and achieve sustained growth. It provides valuable indicators for policy formulation and practical preparation for the success and survival of startups. Through these insights, startups can develop more systematic and effective strategies to overcome the Death Valley and achieve sustainable growth.
