Since many broadcasters produce dramas, domestic drama market already reached saturation. Under the deluge of drama, broadcasters work out their opening title of drama with a differentiated motion graphic. The advancement of motion graphic plays an important role in the production of opening titles, and in order to succeed in the fast growing drama market it is necessary for a drama-maker to work out a differentiated opening title. In this regard, this study examined tvN’s <Hotel Delluna> and JTBC’s <SKY Castle>, ranked first in viewer ratings in 2019, respectively, by dividing their opening titles into the design expressive component and the motion graphic expressive component.
As for the expressive component of design, this study examined layout, typography, color and illustration; whereas as for the expressive component of motion graphic, this study looked into movement, scene change and effect.
Study findings are as follows:
First, the main title of opening titles was placed in the dead center of screen, and created the sense of stability by means of inducing visual concentration. In addition, it increased attentiveness by using a contrasting color to background.
Second, the used color of opening titles was in accord with the atmosphere of drama and therefore, audience could be aware of the mood of drama only through used colors.
Third, opening titles were produced not as a readability- oriented image but as a work.
Based on researches on the cases of drama opening titles, this study examined both the design expressive component and the motion graphic expressive component. In order for a drama to successfully induce audience’s visual interest and watching, the design of its opening title must be differential and strategic.
