정원 속 자연이미지를 통한 '모범생 콤플렉스' 표현 연구 : 나의 작품을 중심으로 = A Study on the Metaphorical expressions of 'Good Student Complex' Through Images of the Garden -Based on My Artworks

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 2014년도부터 2020년도까지 제작된 나의 작품 중 ‘모범생 콤플렉스’라는 주제의식을 표현한 작품들을 대상으로 그 창작의 동기와 작품에 사용된 소재, 작품의 주제와 관련된 이론적 배경 및 조형적 표현 기법 등을 분석하여 후속 작업의 토대를 삼기 위한 작품연구 논문이다.
규범이란 사람이 사회에서 살아가는 데 있어서 여러 판단과 행위, 평가의 기준이 되는 행동 양식이다. 사회가 건강하게 유지되기 위해서는 규범이 필요하고, 이를 지키도록 사람들에게 독려할 수 있도록 하는 ‘모범’이 필요하다. 모범이란 사회가 제시하는 올바른 가치를 잘 수행한 모델로서, 사회는 상벌을 통해 사람들에게 이를 따르도록 권고한다.
모범생은 이러한 모델 중에 하나로서 나를 비롯한 많은 사람들이 학생 시절에 추구하였던 인간상이자, 사회의 올바른 가치에 순응하는 사람을 일컫는 말이다. 그리고 나는 자신도 모르게 모범생이 되기를 추구하는 심리적인 현상을‘모범생 콤플렉스’라고 지칭하였다. 규범과 모범은 사회에 꼭 필요한 것이지만, 이러한 올바른 가치가 하나의 인간상으로 굳어져 사람들에게 지향된다면, 개인이 지닌 다양한 성정이 올바르지 못한 것이 되고 획일화될 수 있다는 점에서 문제 의식을 갖게 되었고 작품을 창작하였다.
궁극적으로 작품을 통해 내가 시사하고자 하는 바는 다양성이 존중되고 개별적인 자아실현을 할 수 있는, 이른바 진정으로 올바른 성장을 할 수 있는 사회에 대한 바람이다. 나는 이러한 주제를 직접적으로 표현하기보다는 일상적인 공간에서 볼 수 있는 정원 및 조경용 식물을 소재로 하여 ‘모범생 콤플렉스’라는 주제를 은유적으로 표현하였다.
본 논문의 내용은 다음과 같다. 제 Ⅰ장에서는 ‘모범생 콤플렉스’라는 주제를 가지고 비판적인 시각을 견지하고 제작해 온 작품의 목적과 표현 방식을 비롯하여 전체적인 논문의 구성과 방향성을 간략히 제시하였다.
제 Ⅱ장에서는 7년간의 작품 전체를 포괄하는 주제인 ‘모범생 콤플렉스’라는 개념에 대해 설명하는 장이다. 특히 이 개념을 분석적으로 살펴보고 이론적인 바탕을 더하고자 하였다.‘모범생 콤플렉스’가 내포한 의미는 크게 3가지로 나누어 살펴보았다. 첫 번째로는 모범의 추구와 획일화 현상에 대한 문제의식이다. 다음으로는 이러한 문제의식에서 비롯한 저항의식과, 기존의 모범을 계속해서 추구하고 모범생이 되고자 하는 순응심리 사이의 괴리감이다. 또한 ‘모범생 콤플렉스’라는 조어의 의미가 끊임없는 자아의 갈등과 콤플렉스를 극복, 진정한 자아의 회복에 대한 의지, 그리고 보다 다채로운 사회에 대한 소망이라는 방향성을 가진다는 점을 다루었다.
제 Ⅲ장은 ‘모범생 콤플렉스’라는 주제를 정원 속 자연물을 통해 은유적으로 표현한 작품에 대해 설명한 장이다. ‘모범생 콤플렉스’를 주제로 하는 작품들은 두 갈래로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 첫째로는 정원 속 재단된 자연물로서, 모범생이 되고자 하는 강박이나 순응 심리가 강조되어 표현된 작품들이 있고 다음으로는 정원 속 잡초로서 이러한 강박에서 벗어나고자 하는 저항의식이 강조되는 작품들이 있다. 따라서 1절에서는 재단된 자연물과 ‘올바른 정원’으로 대표되는 순응적인 모습, 2절에서는 잡초, 그리고 ‘잡초 기르기’와 병든 식물로 대표되는 저항의식의 표현으로 나누어 살펴보았으며, 각각 다방면으로 이론적인 근거를 가지고 작품의 내용과 표현을 뒷받침하였다.
제 Ⅳ장에서는 나의 작품에 나타난 ‘모범생 콤플렉스’라는 주제의 조형적인 표현 방식을 분석하였다. 작품에 주로 쓰인 색채, 다양한 필획 등과 차용과 반복이라는 조형 기법을 분석하고 이러한 조형적인 요소들이 나의 작업에서 어떠한 의미를 가지는지 살펴보았다.
마지막으로 Ⅴ장에서는 정원 속 자연 이미지를 통해 ‘모범생 콤플렉스’라는 주제를 다룬 작품들에 대해 서술한 내용을 통해 작품의 의의를 밝히고, 앞으로의 나아갈 방향에 대해 논하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study focuses on my works from 2014 to 2020 that express the theme of ‘Good-student- complex’. This study aims to organize the context of works and serve as the basis for subsequent work.
A norm is a form of behavior that serves as a standard for judgment, action, evaluation in human social life. In order to keep society healthy, norms are needed, and ‘exemplars’ are needed to encourage people to follow them. Exemplars are models that perform well in society’s right values, and society encourages people to follow them through reward and punishment.
‘A good student(model student)’ is one of these exemplars, which refers to a person who conforms to society’s good values and a personality that many people, including myself, pursued in their school days. I referred to the psychological phenomenon of unconsciously seeking to become a good student as a “Good Student Syndrome”. Norms and exemplars are essential to society, but if these values are solidified into the only ‘correct’ personality and oriented toward people, their diverse attitudes become incorrect and uniform. In this regard, I became aware of problems and created works.
Ultimately, what I want to suggest through my works is a desire for a society where individuals can self-actualization, and diversity can be respected. Rather than expressing this subject directly, I metaphorically expressed the theme of the “Good Student Syndrome” using images of gardens and landscaping plants found in everyday spaces.
The composition of this paper is as follows.
ChapterⅠ briefly presents the composition and direction of the entire paper, including the purpose and expression of the works, created with a critical perspective on the subject of “Good Student Complex”.
ChapterⅡ explains the concept of the “Good Student Complex” ,a theme that covers the entire seven-year works. In particular, I tried to analyze this concept and add a theoretical basis. The meaning of the “Good Student Complex” is divided into three major categories. The first is the pursuit of an exemplary practices and the awareness of the problem about the phenomenon of uniformity. Next, there is a gap between the sense of resistance arising from awareness of the problem, and the sense of conformity, which seeks to pursue existing exemplars and becomes good student. Finally, it also dealt with the meaning of the term "Good Student Complex" as a orientation of overcoming self-conflict and the complex, willingness to restore true self, and a desire for a more colorful society.
ChapterⅢ explains the metaphorical expression of the theme of the “Good Student Complex” through natural objects in the garden. The works with the theme of ‘Good Student Complex’ can be divided into two branches. Some works depict neatly planted gardens, expressing the compulsion to become a good student or the spirit of conformity. The other works depict weeds in a garden, emphasizing the sense of resistance to escape from the obsession of becoming a good student. These two types of works are explained through the series <The Right Garden> and <Growing Weeds>.
ChapterⅣ analyzes the productive way of expressing the theme of the “Good Student Complex” in my works. Here, the work’s significant colors, various strokes, and formative techniques such as appropriation and repetition are analyzed.
Finally, ChapterⅤ summarizes the works on the theme of ‘Good Student Complex’ through the images of nature in the garden and discusses the future direction.
