The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of the emotional expression-focused group art therapy on the adolescents' emotional expressivity.
Eight middle schools in D city were chosen for this study. Experimental group and control group were composed of each 10 students who consented to participate in the study.
The emotional expression-focused group art therapy were performed to the experimental group two or three times every week, total eleven times, from April to May, 2008. Research instruments included Emotional Expressivity Scale(EES) developed by Kring, Smith, and Neale(1994) and Ambivalence Over Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire(AEQ) developed by King and Emmons(1990). Statistical Package for the Social Science(SPSS) was used for the data analysis adopting Anlysis of Variance, ANOVA, of which dependent variables were means of before and after experiment.
The results of this study include followings.
First, the emotional expression-focused group art therapy influenced on the increase of the adolescents' emotional expression.
Second, the emotional expression-focused group art therapy influenced on the decrease of the adolescents' emotional expression ambilaterality and negative emotional expression ambilaterality. The positive emotional expression ambilaterality also decreased which was not statistically significant.
Consequently, the emotional expression-focused group art therapy have a positive effect on the adolescents' emotional expressivity. That is, the emotional expression-focused group art therapy makes the adolescents express their emotion to others and decreases the conflict of their emotional expressions. Thus, the emotional expression-focused group art therapy is considered to be used as an effective mediating method to adapt the adolescents to various emotional situations.
