로프 코일링의 표현 특성을 응용한 패션디자인 = Fashion design appiying expressive characteristics of rope coiling

Fashion is a form of artistic expression that requires creativity and innovation, and art plays an important role in fashion design research.
Many modern fashion designers are constantly attempting research for new artistic expressions and developing various designs through materials, colors, and techniques to show the expandability and possibility of expression. Accordingly, materials and expression techniques are closely combined with each other and become important factors in determining creative design expression, giving them special value in the fashion field. Various materials always exist around us, and they serve as a driving force for realizing unique artistic value by utilizing the properties of materials or applying various expression techniques through unique expression methods of mixing materials. Accordingly, this study understands the properties of rope through the possibilities of utilizing various materials and methods of expression through techniques, and applies creative design expression methods according to the expression characteristics of the coiling technique to the work to expand the expression effect of new fashion design. The contents and methods of this study are as follows. In order to organize the concept of rope through theoretical consideration and collect data on the types and functional characteristics of rope, we reviewed data through sites that produce and sell rope, and based on this, we collected examples of fashion design works using rope and conduct research on expression methods. In addition, for a theoretical consideration of the coiling technique, we look at books and dissertations, analyze the expressive characteristics of examples of works using the coiling technique, and based on this, we analyze examples of fashion design works in which the coiling technique is applied. Based on the theoretical concepts analyzed previously, four pieces of differentiated clothing are produced through fashion design that applies the expressive characteristics of the coiling technique using rope. The specific results obtained based on the theoretical analysis of this study are as follows.
First, the rope, which started out as a simple string made of plant fibers, evolved into a practical form depending on the intended use, incorporating the strength, durability, and flexibility that dominate the performance of the rope based on scientific technology. All types of rope have different uses depending on the fiber, thickness and structure, and fiber ropes are divided into natural fibers and synthetic fibers. The representative structures of rope are classified into 3 strand twist, 8 and 12 strand flat, and double braid.
Second, the current rope is used in various fields of art as an important material of art beyond a simple tool of daily life. As a result of analyzing fashion design using rope, rope in the fashion field is used alone rather than expressed as a mixture of other materials and it was used as a tool for decorative expression and effective expression of the fabric by constructing cotton or using a small portion of the garment area.
Third, as a result of examining the concept and types of coiling techniques, coiling is a type of basketry work where materials are rolled up into a desired shape and fixed with stitches. There are eight-shaped stitch, line stitch, and lace stitch. The coiling technique is a traditional handicraft technique that was part of early human life. Currently, it has brought about a lot of development in the field of textile arts and is being used as a new expressive technique by combining various materials and formative works that exclude practicality and usefulness.
Fourth, by observing examples of works utilizing the coiling technique, it was possible to classify them into five expressive characteristics: density, repetition, transparency, overlap, and atypicality. Based on this, it was found that the application of the coiling technique shown in the fashion field is helpful in expanding creative design by using it as a technique for composing formative forms.
The results of the production of this study are as follows.
First, costumes were produced reflecting the expressive characteristics derived from examples of works that used the coiling technique to express formative forms. It was found that it was possible to construct an immediate form by using rope, the main material, and applying coiling stitch as an expression that could differentiate the expression of each costume.
Second, the rope, the material of the work, has durability and strength, and was able to create a three-dimensional sense of space by emphasizing the structural form. By combining the units of the rope, the expression based on formative principles was expanded and the strength of the rope was increased. The rope made of fibers showed accidental changes in shape due to the artist's intentional use, and the flexibility of the rope made it easy to freely implement the shape.
Third, the coiling stitch technique, a type of basketry, can be applied to a variety of materials as a method of fixing a three-dimensional shape. The needle, a hand stitching tool applied to the rope, was used in a size that could accommodate thick thread, showing that it was possible to produce a large sculpture using a simple tool. The coiling stitch was able to complement the weight of the material and further specify the structural form by adjusting the position, spacing, and length, and the coiling technique was a traditional handcraft method that allowed for the coexistence of tradition and modernity in the work. Accordingly, this study confirmed the possibility of various shape changes by applying the various expressive characteristics of the coiling technique and applying a coiling stitch that can well express the formative form of the rope. Based on this, it helps develop various materials and create new expressions in the future fashion field.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

패션은 예술적 표현의 한 형태로서 창의력과 혁신을 요구하며 예술은 패션 디자인을 연구함에 있어 중요한 역할을 한다. 현대의 많은 패션 디자이너들은 새로운 예술적 표현을 위한 연구를 끊임없이 시도하고 소재, 색채, 기법을 통해 다양한 디자인을 개발하여 표현의 확장성과 가능성을 보여주고 있다. 이에 소재와 표현 기법은 서로 긴밀하게 결합되어 창의적인 디자인 표현을 결정짓는 중요한 요소가 되며 패션 분야에서 특별한 가치를 부여하고 있다. 다양한 소재는 항상 우리 주변에 존재하며 소재가 지닌 성질을 활용하거나 소재 혼합의 독특한 표현 방식으로 다양한 표현 기법을 응용하여 독창적인 예술적 가치를 실현할 수 있는 원동력이 된다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 다양한 소재 활용에 관한 가능성과 기법에 의한 표현의 방법으로 로프가 지닌 성질을 이해하고 코일링 기법의 표현 특성에 따른 창의적인 디자인의 표현 방법을 작품에 적용함으로써 새로운 패션 디자인의 표현 효과를 확장하고자 한다.
본 연구의 내용과 방법은 다음과 같다. 이론적 고찰을 통해 로프의 개념을 정리 하고 로프의 종류와 기능적인 특징에 관한 자료 수집을 위해 로프를 제작, 판매하는 사이트를 통해 자료를 검토하며 이를 바탕으로 로프를 활용한 패션디자인 작품 사례를 수집하여 표현 방법에 관한 연구를 한다. 또한 코일링 기법의 이론적 고찰을 위해 단행본 및 학위논문을 살펴보고 코일링 기법을 활용한 작품 사례들의 표현 특성을 분석하며 이를 토대로 코일링 기법이 적용된 패션디자인 작품 사례를 분석한다. 앞서 분석한 이론적 개념을 바탕으로 로프를 활용하여 코일링 기법의 표현 특성을 응용한 패션 디자인으로 차별화된 의상 4점을 제작한다.
본 연구의 이론적 분석을 기반으로 얻은 구체적인 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 식물 섬유로 만들어진 간단한 끈으로 시작한 로프는 과학적 기술의 바탕으로 로프의 성능을 지배하는 강도와 내구성 및 유연성이 내포되어 사용 용도에 따라 실용적인 형태로 진화하였다. 모든 종류의 로프는 섬유와 제작하는 굵기와 구조에 따라 용도가 달라지며 섬유 로프는 천연 섬유와 합성 섬유로 나누어지며 대표적인 로프의 구조는 3 스트랜드 트위스트, 8과 12 스트랜드 플래트, 더블 브레이드로 분류되고 있다.
둘째, 현재의 로프는 단순한 실생활의 도구를 넘어 예술의 중요한 소재로 여러 예술 분야에서 활용되고 있으며 로프를 활용한 패션디자인을 분석한 결과 패션분야에서의 로프는 다른 소재의 혼합으로 표현하기 보다는 단독적으로 로프를 활용했으며 면을 구성하거나 의복 면적의 작은 부분을 사용하여 장식적인 표현과 원단의 효과적인 표현을 위한 도구로 사용했음을 보여준다.
셋째, 코일링 기법의 개념과 종류를 살펴본 결과 코일링은 바구니 세공의 일종으로 재료를 원하는 형태로 감아올려 스티치로 고정시키는 방식으로 8자형 스티치, 라인스티치, 레이스 스티치가 있다. 코일링 기법은 초기 인류 생활의 일부였던 전통 수공예 기법으로 현재는 섬유예술 분야에서 많은 발전을 가져왔으며 실용성과 유용성을 배재한 여러 재료와 조형 작업들이 결합되어 새로운 표현의 기법으로 활용되어 지고 있다.
넷째, 코일링 기법을 활용한 작품 사례들을 관찰하여 5가지의 표현 특성으로 밀도성, 반복성, 투시성, 중첩성, 비정형성으로 분류할 수 있었으며 이를 토대로 패션분야에서 보여지는 코일링 기법의 적용은 조형적 형태를 구성하는 기법으로 활용함에 창의적인 디자인 확장에 도움이 되고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
본 연구의 작품 제작에 의한 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 조형적인 형태 표현을 위해 코일링 기법을 활용한 작품 사례에서 도출한 표현 특성을 반영하여 의상을 제작하였고 이는 각 의상의 표현에 차별성을 둘 수 있는 표현으로 주된 소재인 로프를 활용하고 코일링 스티치를 적용하여 즉각적인 형태의 구축이 가능하였음을 알 수 있었다.
둘째, 작품의 소재인 로프는 내구성과 강도가 내포되어 구조적인 형태를 강조하여 입체적인 공간감을 형성할 수 있었다. 로프의 단위가 결합됨으로써 조형적 원리에 따른 표현이 확장 되었고 로프의 강도를 높였다. 섬유로 짜여진 로프는 작가의 의도적인 활용으로 우연적인 형태의 변화를 나타냈으며 로프의 유연성은 형태를 자유자재적으로 구현하는데 있어 용이하였다.
셋째, 바구니 세공의 일종인 코일링 스티치 기법은 입체적인 형태를 고정 할 수 있는 방법으로 다양한 소재에 적용이 가능하였다. 로프에 적용된 핸드 스티치의 도구인 바늘은 두꺼운 실이 들어 갈 수 있는 사이즈를 선택하여 사용하였으며 이는 간단한 도구를 사용하여 거대한 조형물의 제작도 가능함을 보여주었다. 또한 코일링 스티치는 위치, 간격, 길이의 조절로 재료의 무게감을 보완하고 구조적 형태를 더욱 구체화 할 수 있었으며 코일링 기법은 전통 수공예 방법으로 작품에서 전통과 현대가 공존할 수 있는 연출을 할 수 있었다.
이에 본 연구는 코일링 기법의 다양한 표현 특성을 응용하고 로프의 조형적 형태 표현을 잘 구현할 수 있는 코일링 스티치를 적용하여 다채로운 형태 변화의 가능성을 확인하고 이를 바탕으로 미래의 패션 분야에 있어 다양한 소재의 개발과 새로운 표현양식의 창출에 도움을 준다.
