성인진입기 상담전공 대학원생의 진로모색 과정에 관한 질적연구 = A Qualitative Study on the Career Exploration Process of Graduate Students Majoring in Counseling in their Emerging Adulthood

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 근거이론 방법을 적용하여 성인진입기 상담전공 대학원생의 진로모색 과정을 설명하는 실체이론을 제시하는 것이다. 성인진입기 상담전공 대학원생들이 진로모색 과정에서 무엇을 경험하고, 진로모색 과정에 영향을 미치는 요인들이 무엇인지 탐색하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 성인진입기 상담전공 대학원생 13명을 대상으로 심층면접을 진행하였고, Strauss & Corbin(1998)이 제시한 근거이론 방법에 따라 분석하였다.
분석 결과, 개방코딩에서 89개의 개념과 39개의 하위범주, 17개의 범주가 도출되었고, 중심현상은 ‘현실과 내적 가치 사이의 불균형’으로 나타났다. 중심현상의 원인이 된 인과적 조건은 ‘내적 가치에 이끌려 상담의 길에 들어섬’으로 나타났으며, 중심현상에 영향을 미치는 맥락적 조건은 ‘사회적 기대와 시선의 인식’, ‘독립이라는 발달과업’, ‘기대와는 다른 상담자의 현실’로 나타났다. 중심현상에 대한 작용/상호작용 전략을 조절하는 중재적 조건은 ‘상담자에 대한 부모의 태도’, ‘주변의 정서적 지지’로 나타났다. 작용/상호작용 전략은 ‘모호함을 홀로 감내하기’, ‘진로를 고민하며 결정을 망설이기’, ‘내적 진로동기를 강화하기’, ‘패기 있게 도전하기’, ‘현실적인 제약을 극복해 나가기’, ‘상담자 상에 대한 인식을 제고 하기’, ‘상담자의 길에 한 걸음 다가서기’로 나타났다. 이에 따른 결과는 ‘현실을 마주하고 진로를 모색해감’, ‘상담공부를 통해 정체감을 형성해감’, ‘진로에 대한 확신을 갖게 됨’으로 나타났다.
본 연구에서 도출한 시간의 흐름에 따른 성인진입기 상담전공 대학원생의 진로모색 과정은 ‘갈등 및 혼란 단계’, ‘불안정 단계’, ‘시도 단계’, ‘명료화 단계’의 4단계로 나타났으며, 선택코딩 절차를 통해 핵심범주는 ‘현실과 내적 가치 사이의 불균형 속에서 현실을 마주하고 내적 동기와 가치를 기억하며 진로를 모색해 나아감’으로 도출되었다.
본 연구는 성인진입기 상담전공 대학원생의 진로모색 과정을 이해하고, 그들이 진로를 모색하는 데 필요한 실질적인 방안 및 지원책 마련을 위한 경험적 근거자료를 제시했다는 데 의의가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to suggest a substantive theory that explains the career exploration process of graduate students majoring in counseling in their emerging adulthood. Applying the grounded theory methodology, this study examines what these students experience throughout their career exploration process, and what elements they are affected by. Total 13 graduate students majoring in counseling in their emerging adulthood were interviewed, in which its result was analyzed based on the ground theory suggested by Strauss & Corbin(1998).
The analysis resulted in 89 concepts, 39 sub-categories, and 17 categories, in which the central phenomenon was identified as ‘the discrepancy between reality and internal value’. The causal condition of the central phenomenon was identified as ‘entering the counseling field driven by internal value’, while the contextual condition that affects the central phenomenon was identified as ‘recognizing social expectations and perspectives’, ‘independence as a developmental task’, and ‘the discrepancy between expectation and reality as a counselor’. The intervening conditions that controls the action/interaction strategy for the central phenomenon were seen as ‘Parents’ attitude towards counselors’, and ‘emotional support from surroundings’. The action/interaction strategies were ‘tolerating the ambiguity alone’, ‘hesitating to make a career choice’, ‘reinforcing internal career motivation’, ‘taking on bold challenges’, ‘overcoming practical constraints’, ‘an improved perception of the counselor image’, and ‘taking a step forward to become a counselor’. Their following results were ‘facing the reality and proceeding to career exploration’, ‘forming a sense of self identity by studying counseling’, and ‘becoming certain about the career path’.
The chronological process of career exploration of graduate students majoring in counseling in their emerging adulthood derived from this study is presented in four stages, ‘Conflict and Confusion’, ‘Instability’, ‘Attempt’, and ‘Clarification’. The core category examined by the optional coding process is found as ‘Facing the reality and proceeding towards career exploration, reminding oneself of the internal motivation amid the discrepancy between reality and internal value.
The significance of this study lies in the fact that is understands the career exploration experience of graduate students majoring in counseling in their emerging adulthood and provides an experiential evidence for future development of necessary practical support.
