Recent uncertainty in terms of future prospects and fierce competition has led to the emergence of a new competitive strategy known as “creative management.” To respond to uncertainty, companies require flexibility and innovative competence rather than formulaic principles. Under such circumstances, creativity is being emphasized as a key factor in gaining a competitive advantage. To address the unpredictability of markets, companies have been endeavoring to prepare themselves for market leadership by creating innovations previously unseen, drastically increasing the customer value embedded in their existing products, or better identifying potential markets. Through this effort, they have shifted their focus toward individual and organizational creative capabilities.

This paper suggests “theatrical competence” as a solution for improving the creative competence required for creative management. Theater centers on bringing a dramatic script to life on stage. Particularly, actors and actresses create their characters by examining and interpreting all the elements expressed within the text. In response, ongoing training in theatrical competence has been promoted through a diversity of methods. In this context, this study aims to link theater to creative management and ultimately identify ways to enhance creative management competence through existing actor training systems.

    The study proceeded as follows:

Firstly, it dealt with the correlation between creative management and creative thinking competence based on best practices for creative management, including those used by Nintendo, Apple and the BBC.
Secondly, theatrical actor training systems were examined in connection with creative management. For this purpose, it explored certain relevant acting theories from major theater practitioners including Stanislavski, Keith Johnstone and Lee Strasberg, and categorized them into five actor-training methods: training on a creative mindset, the senses, observation, improvisation and sub-text. Drawing on these five training areas and their examples, the study explored how to approach creative thinking.
Lastly, it provided an analysis of the effects of such actor training systems on the creative capabilities of individuals as members of an organization. In addition, it reinterpreted the effects of actor training in the light of "Knowledge Creation Management" theory to identify ways in which to expand individual creative competence across the entire organization.

The study found that theatrical actor training has a positive effect on increasing creative management competence in terms of the four areas listed below.

Firstly, actor training improved the ability to think visually. Visual thinking capability is developed mainly in the right hemisphere of the brain, which stores and processes nonverbal data such as visual images and spatial relations. Visual thinking positively affects the cultivation of creativity through the “sensory exercises” used in actor training. This training allows subjects to gain a fresh perspective on a specific object by erasing preconceptions of its nature and recreating images through the stimulation of the five senses. An object stored as an obscure set of images is used by the storage function of the right-brain, which is mainly in charge of similarities, as a source of comparison, analogy, and imagination. At this point, the imagination produces further images. Apart from images as a response to actual objects, the images created by the imagination provide an equivocal concept on a notion or a vision that does not exist in the real world, thereby stimulating the creative instinct.

Secondly, actor training can promote a Medici effect through free association. Creative mindset training is used to remove an obsession with creative work. This means eliminating the limitations of thought; as a result, creative thinking outside of the box unfolds freely and generates a third component by connecting distinct attributes. Given the multiple cases where, in the field of creative management, the connection of unrelated existing properties led to the development of creative solutions, adopting a variety of mediating structures is expected to result in new value.

Thirdly, this type of training can improve the analytic ability to understand the true nature of circumstances. This can be interpreted from the point of view that acting training is not necessarily based solely on intuition and improvisation. To eschew stereotypes in analyzing their roles, actors should discover their own unique original personality apart from typical and fragmentary characteristics, which is linked to “observation training” and “subtext exercises.” These forms of training allow them to pose a new question or to find a solution by exploring objects or circumstances from a fresh perspective. Over the course of questioning circumstances and seeking an answer, they come to understand the true nature of the circumstances. This ability reduces the limitations on thought, approaches situations from diverse angles and forms the foundation of creative management.

Finally, the training systems used for actors have an influence on not only improving individual creativity, but also on establishing a system to maintain creative management by building a creative corporate environment. The results based on Nonaka Ikujiro’s "Knowledge Creation Management" theory demonstrate that this training can play a part in accelerating the process through which individuals’ or small groups’ creativity and creative discovery can extend into collective knowledge creation. Namely, the creativity developed through actor training is used in the knowledge-creating cycle of socialization, externalization, combination, and internalization within companies. This can then in turn contribute to securing the sustainability of creative management by being applied to a management model of creative organizational structures.

This study examined and analyzed from a variety of angles the positive effects that theatrical competence can have on the recently emerging trend of creative management by exploring the academic intersection of business administration, theatrical studies, and psychology, along with actual cases of creative management. It is hoped that in the near future, these findings will assist the development of theatrical programs applicable to practical corporate management, thereby directly contributing to creative management.
