From the simple question that it may be happiness that makes us unhappy, the researcher’s thought of the ideal world began. The thought of the ideal world developed from the ideal in the sense that it is the midpoint between happiness and unhappiness into the denial of all binary opposition except the opposition of happiness and unhappiness, and as a result, into the pursuit of uncertainty. This attribute of the ideal world was also found in physics like Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle and the concepts of the Post-structuralist philosophers like Différance. Based on these concepts, research works were presented that represented the ideal space as coexistence of the concepts of absence and uncertainty.
Through definition and examination of the concepts ‘absence’ and ‘uncertainty’, this study defined the dictionary meaning and philosophical meaning of ‘absence’ and ‘uncertainty’, which are the core concepts of the researcher’s work. Then this study deliberated on the concept of absence as presence made of absence represented in the sculptures of Rachel Whiteread. As for the concept of uncertainty in quantum mechanics, this study elucidated uncertainty as a concept signifying multi-valuedness that implies all possibilities.
As for examples that represent the space of absence and the concept of uncertainty, this study explored the concept of absence as represented in the absent cityscape of Edward Hopper and Eugène Atget; and analyzed the representation of uncertainty through the medium of photography of Gerhard Richter and Peter Doig.
Regarding analysis of the researcher’s representation of the ideal space, this study enumerated the conceptual languages, which were central to the researcher’s work, and explained the meanings and correlations of the words. And it also examined the works that contained the conceptual languages defined thus.
‘Uncertainty’ as it used in this study is not a concept signifying’ being uncertain or unclear’, but a concept referring to ‘being undecided’. Since it is undecided, it is open to many possibilities and free will. The researcher will continue the effort to deliver new messages by constructing in a new way the ideal space that highlights uncertainty.
