This study carried out 12 weeks of aerobic sports program to examine the effect of the program on obese children's body composition and bone mineral density. 20 elementary students, aerobic sports group(n=10) and control group(n=10), from elementary school located in Jeolabukdo participated in the program. T-test was used for the verification of the difference in average rate before the program and after the program, and independent t-test was carried out for comparative analysis of the paired group. The significance level of this study was set at p<0.5, and the results are as follows.
First, the body weight changes were measured before and after the 12 weeks aerobic sports program, and the result of t-test showed a decreasing tendency of body weight in aerobic sports program group with a significance level of (p<.01).
Second, the body fat % were measured before and after the 12 weeks aerobic sports program, and the result of t-test showed a decreasing tendency of body fat % in aerobic sports program group with a significance level of (p<.05). Although the control group had an increasing tendency, it showed no statistical significance.
Third, the waist-hip % were measured before and after the 12 weeks aerobic sports program, and the result of t-test showed a decreasing tendency of waist-hip % in aerobic sports program group with a significance level of (p<.05). Although the control group had an increasing tendency, it showed no statistical significance.
Fourth, the bone densities at calcaneus were measured before and after the 12 weeks aerobic sports program, and an increasing tendency of bone density was observed in both groups.
The result from data analysis implies that the aerobic sports program can be considered as a exercise of the whole body program that leads to a drop in elementary students' body fat and abdominal obesity degree and also an increase of LBM(Lean Body Mass). To help students maintain desirable weight and improve health condition, various kind of aerobic sports program and relevant studies should be continuously developed.
