Sergei Prokofiev의 <Four Pieces for Piano, Op. 4>에 관한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

러시아의 대표적인 작곡가인 세르게이 프로코피에프(Sergei Prokofiev, 1891-1953)는 독창적이며 다양한 음악어법을 가지고 폭넓은 장르에 걸쳐 작곡하며 20세기 전반 중요한 음악적인 영향을 끼친 인물이다. 그의 삶과 작품세계는 어린 시절부터 서구로 떠나기 전인 초기 러시아에서 보낸 시기, 서구에서의 활동 시기, 다시 소련으로 돌아가서 보낸 시기까지 총 세 시기로 나눌 수 있다.
프로코피에프는 두 편의 자서전을 썼는데, 이 자서전에서 자신의 작곡 어법을 다섯 가지의 음악적인 요소로 나누어서 설명하였다. 그것은 고전적(Classical), 현대적(Modern), 토카타적(Toccata), 서정적(Lyrical) 그리고 괴기적(Grotesque)인 요소이며, 프로코피에프는 본인의 초기 작품에 관하여 이 경향들을 설명했지만, 전반적인 그의 작품에서 이러한 경향들을 찾아볼 수 있다.
그의 초기 작품인 《Four Pieces for Piano, Op.4》는 1908년에 완성하였고, 1908년 12월 31일 페테르부르크에서 열린 ‘제 45회 현대음악의 밤(The evenings of Contemporary Music)’에서 초연되었다. 이 작품은 ‘회상(Reminiscence)’, ‘도약(Elan)’, ‘절망(Despair)’, ‘악마적 암시(Suggestion Diabolique)’의 네 곡으로 이루어진 피아노 소품으로, 불협화음과 반음계적 화성, 타악기적인 요소, 기계적인 리듬, 그리고 서정적인 선율이 특징적이다. 특히 ‘악마적 암시’는 복잡한 악센트 리듬, 불안감을 조성하는 트릴과 화음, 그리고 폭넓은 음역과 극적인 셈여림이 사용되었다. 이로 인해 비평가들에게 강한 인상을 주어 프로코피에프는 그 당시 러시아 음악계에서 주목을 받게 되었다.

This thesis is a study on ⟪Four Pieces for Piano, Op. 4⟫by Sergei Prokofiev. This paper examines Sergei Prokofiev’s life and his musical works through each of the three phases, and then analyzes one of his early works, ⟪Four Pieces for Piano, Op. 4⟫ to reveal its musical characteristics.
Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953), a Russian composer, was a significant figure in the twentieth-century music, and wrote a number of musical works in a wide range of genres. His life and musical career can be divided into three phases: his early childhood in Russia before he left for the Western world; years in the Western world; and his later years spent back in the Soviet Union.
During his life, Prokofiev wrote two autobiographies in which he explained his compositional style with five musical characteristics: classical, modern, toccata, lyrical, and grotesque. Although Prokofiev said that only his early works illustrated these musical characteristics, all these traits could be observed in all his works.
One of his early works, ⟪Four Pieces for Piano, Op. 4⟫ was composed in 1908, and premiered at the forty-fifth concert of the Evenings of Contemporary Music in St. Petersburg on December 31, 1908. This musical work consists of four pieces, “Reminiscence”, “Elan”, “Despair”, and “Suggestion Diabolique”. And, this work is characterized by use of dissonances, chromatic chords, percussive elements, driving rhythms, and lyrical melodies. In particular, in the last piece, “Suggestion Diabolique,” he employed complicated accentual rhythms, trills, and repeated chords with non-harmonic tones over a wide range of the keyboard, and extremely contrasting dynamics to create tension. This piece had a strong impression on critics and garnered attention from the Russian musical scene at the time.
