임철우 소설에 나타난 죄의식 연구 = A Study on the Sense of Guilt of Lim Chul Woo’s Novels

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 임철우의 작품을 관통하는 주제인 ‘죄의식’을 중심으로 그의 작품을 살펴 보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그간 임철우 문학에 대한 연구는 크게 문학적 형식 측면, 역사적 사건에 대한 측면, 윤리적 주제에 대한 측면에서 다루어져 왔다. 이 중 윤리 적 주제에 관한 연구에서 죄의식이 다뤄진 바 있지만, 특정 작품을 분석하는 과정 에서 논의되는 경우가 많았다. 본고는 임철우의 작품에 나타난 죄의식을 총체적으 로 다룬 연구가 미비했다는 점에서 착안하여, 그의 문학 전반에 나타나고 있는 죄 의식을 고찰하여 그의 작품 세계를 더욱 깊게 이해하는 데 도움이 되고자 한다. 임철우는 죄의식을 극복하기 위해 초자연적 구원이나 신의 용서에 의존하지 않고, 현실적이고 인간적인 노력과 공동체적 연대를 강조한다. 그의 작품에서 유해 발굴 과 같은 행위는 단순한 물리적 행위를 넘어 은폐된 과거를 소환하고 역사적 진실과 마주하며, 죄의식과 상처를 되새기고 화해와 치유를 모색하는 과정으로 그려진다. 또한, ꡔ백년여관ꡕ에 등장하는 굿과 같은 전통적 의식은 폭력과 죄책감으로 훼손된 개인과 공동체의 균열을 봉합하려는 상징적 행위로 나타난다. 이러한 굿은 잃어버 린 기억을 복원하고 상처를 치유하며, 화해를 이루는 현실적이고 연대적인 해원의 방식으로 기능한다. 임철우의 문학은 폭력과 죄의식이 단지 과거의 문제가 아니라, 세대를 넘어 현재 와 미래에도 영향을 미친다는 점을 강조하며, 윤리적 책임과 연대의 중요성을 일깨 운다. 이를 통해 그의 작품은 비극적 역사를 단순히 기록하거나 회고하는 데 머무 르지 않고, 폭력과 죄의식의 구조를 직시하며 이를 극복하기 위한 인간적 가능성을 탐구한다. 임철우 문학의 이러한 특성은 한국문학에서 죄의식이 인간의 내면 세계 와 사회적 성찰을 이끄는 중요한 주제로 기능할 수 있음을 보여준다. 더불어, 죄의 식은 비극적 역사나 트라우마를 문학적으로 재현하고 화해와 구원의 서사를 가능하 게 함으로써 인간과 사회의 회복 가능성을 제시한다. 이러한 점에서 임철우 문학은 한국문학에서 독자적인 정체성과 윤리적 메시지를 전달하는 중요한 위치를 차지한다.

This study aims to examine the theme of "guilt," which permeates Lim Chul Woo's works, to gain a deeper understanding of his literary world. Previous research on Lim Chul Woo's literature has largely focused on literary forms, historical events, and ethical themes. While guilt has been addressed in studies on ethical themes, it has often been discussed in the context of analyzing specific works. Recognizing the lack of comprehensive studies on guilt across Lim Chul Woo’s oeuvre, this study seeks to explore the representation of guilt in his works more holistically.
Lim Chul Woo emphasizes overcoming guilt not by relying on supernatural salvation or divine forgiveness, but through realistic, human efforts and communal solidarity. In his works, actions such as exhuming remains transcend mere physical acts, evoking hidden pasts, confronting historical truths, and revisiting guilt and trauma to seek reconciliation and healing. Similarly, traditional rituals such as the exorcism rite depicted in The Hundred-Year Inn (Baeknyeon Yeogwan) function as symbolic acts aimed at mending the fractures of individuals and communities damaged by violence and guilt. These rituals serve as practical and collective methods of restoration, recovering lost memories, healing wounds, and achieving reconciliation.
Lim Chul Woo’s literature underscores that violence and guilt are not merely issues of the past but have a transgenerational impact, influencing the present and future. His works highlight the importance of ethical responsibility and communal solidarity, prompting readers to reflect on these values. By directly confronting the structures of violence and guilt and exploring human possibilities for overcoming them, his literature moves beyond simply recording or reflecting on historical tragedies. Instead, it delves into the ethical and emotional dimensions of human experience, offering profound insights into reconciliation and restoration.
This characteristic of Lim Chul Woo's literature illustrates how guilt in Korean literature serves as a pivotal theme, fostering introspection into human inner worlds and societal conditions. Guilt becomes a powerful literary tool for representing tragic histories and trauma, enabling narratives of reconciliation and redemption. By doing so, it presents possibilities for the recovery of both individuals and society. In this regard, Lim Chul Woo’s literary contributions occupy a distinctive and significant position within Korean literature, delivering unique ethical messages and establishing his literary identity.
