전통 조각보를 활용한 조형성 수업 방안 : 면구성과 색의 배합을 중심으로 = Method of Art Instruction Based on the Plasticity of Traditional ‘Jogakbo’

Our traditional ‘Jogakbo’, patchwork wrapping-cloths, was just a living necessity made by women in the period of the Joseon era, but it is evaluated as a modern and refined method of geometric abstraction today. We can see our traditional ‘Jogakbo’ is valuable as remarkable plastic art in the modern times, and at the same time, it is a proud and excellent cultural element of Korea which has been shared with the world, rather than valuable only in our history, by comparative study with modern abstract art.
Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the method of art instruction utilizing traditional Jogakbo to help students be able to understand and utilize plasticity in the right way. The traditional Jagakbo is a traditional work of art which reveals features of plastic art. Jagakbo, which demonstrates the Korean sentiment and aesthetic sense, is a medium through which students will be able to recognize the excellence of Korean traditional art.
The educational effects that can be obtained through an art education utilizing the traditional Jagakbo as a resource are as follows:
First, students are able to develop their ability to look at art and basic plastic ability, which are necessary skills for middle school students. Through art class, they can reinterpret the plasticity of the traditional Jogakbo in a modern way.
Second, the opportunity can be provided to the students to improve their understanding about our traditional culture. It’s one of the major roles of education to inherit and develop the traditional culture. In addition, students will be able to understand that art is closely related to real life. It’s more important for students to recognize the value of traditional art than for them to focus on the outcome of their individual projects. Therefore, the art class utilizing the ramie cloth can give the opportunity for students to feel the ramie cloth and experience the essence of Korean art. Also, it helps them to realize the excellence of Korean traditional art indirectly.
Third, students are able to learn our forefathers’ values of frugality. Jogakbo is wrapping cloths made with remnants of cloth. Jogakbo embodies the value of frugality which ensured our forefathers didn’t throw away even a grain of rice. One of the hardest tasks for women in the Joseon Dynasty was to weave a cloth. They would not throw away even a scrap of the cloth they got through such a great effort.
This thesis was prepared with the intention for learners to gain a self-respecting pride in our culture through art class by utilizing the Jogakbo as a resource, and for them to realize that Jogakbo is a valuable resource for art classes though Jogakbo was only made out of necessity by old women, not by artists. Furthermore, it is expected that this thesis contribute to more various researches in traditional art instructions.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

우리나라 전통 조각보는 조선시대 여성들에 의해 만들어진 생활용품에 불과했던 것이 오늘날 현대 기하추상 미술 작품과 비견될 만큼 매우 현대적이고 세련된 것이라는 평가를 받고 있다. 우리의 전통 조각보는 현대 추상 미술과의 비교를 통해 전통 조각보가 우리의 역사 속에서만 가치 있는 것이 아니라 현대에도 통하는 뛰어난 조형적 가치를 가지고 있으며 이는 세계 속에서도 결코 뒤지지 않는 자랑스럽고 우수한 우리의 문화유산임을 알 수 있다.
따라서 본 연구는 학생들이 조형성을 이해하고 바르게 사용하는 학습을 위해 전통 조각보를 활용하여 지도방안을 연구하게 되었다. 전통 조각보는 조형적 미적 특성이 잘 드러나는 전통 미술품이다. 학생들로 하여금 전통미술의 우수성을 알게 하고 한국적인 정서와 미의식이 담긴 전통 조각보를 수업의 소재로 삼게 되었다.
본 논문에서는 전통 조각보의 발생배경과 사용계층 구조적 특징 재료 폭 수 문양의 종류, 분류에 대하여 알아보고 조각보의 기능적, 미적 가치를 알아보았다. 그리고 조각보의 면 구성과 색의 배합과 같은 조형적인 측면을 살펴보았다.
전통 조각보를 소재로 미술 교육을 실시하였을 때 얻을 수 있는 교육적 효과는 다음과 같다. 조각보의 조형성을 현대적으로 재해석한 수업을 통해 미적 안목을 키우고 중학생들에게 필요한 기초 조형 능력을 신장하며 활용할 수 있다. 또 우수한 전통 문화가 단절되지 않도록 교육을 통해 계승, 발전시키는 일은 교육의 중요한 역할이다. 그러한 노력으로 전통 조각보를 활용한 조형성 수업이 전통 문화에 대한 이해를 도움과 동시에 학생들이 미술이 생활과 쉽게 적하며 이해 할 수 있다. 단순히 작품 제작에만 집중하여 결과물 중심적인 학습에 그치는 것이 아니라 전통미술을 재인식 시켜 학생들이 그것의 가치를 스스로 깨우치는 것이 중요하므로 모시 천을 이용한 수업이 손으로 느끼고 표현하는 것에 정서적 체험을 할 수 있는 기회를 제공함으로 인해 학생들이 간접적으로 체험하며 한국 전통 문화의 우수성이 학습 할 수 있다.
마지막으로 조각보는 말 그대로 남은 자투리 천 조각으로 만든 보자기를 말한다. 밥 한 톨도 함부로 버리지 않는 정신이 조각보에도 그대로 반영된 것이다. 조선 시대에 여성들이 했던 일 가운데 힘든 일이 이 옷감을 짜는 일이라고 한다. 힘들게 얻은 천을 함부로 버릴 수가 없었을 것이다. 조각보 작품을 만드는 학습은 선조들의 절약 정신과 전통 생활모습의 단면과 그들의 가치관을 가르칠 수 있다.
연구자는 조각보를 소재로 하여 조형성의 미적 가치를 통해 학습자가 우리 문화에 대한 자부심을 가지고 올바르게 이해하길 바란다. 그리고 전통생활소품이며 예술가가 아닌 옛 여인들이 만든 조각보를 미술교육의 소재로서 활용 가능성이 충분히 가치 있다는 사실을 이번 연구를 통해서 널리 우리 전통 문화를 토대로 한 교육 자료가 더욱 효과적일 수 있다는 가능성을 발견하고 더욱 활발하게 전통 미술 교육 방안 연구가 이루어지기를 바란다.
