This thesis has its purpose in researching, dividing, and analyzing the
inherent traits and symbolism in the patterns of white porcelain from the
Joseon Dynasty. Due to the fact that the painting style in the patterns of
white porcelain are usually the same as the one during the Joseon Dynasty,
analyzing and studying the patterns and symbolism in the Dynasty white
porcelain is important in understanding the development and life of art culture
during that period in the flow of ceramics.
Ceramics are important in the fact that they are very close in Korean's
life, and it is hard to find something that is used by all the classes: rulers,
subjugates, those who live in cities, and those in countrysides. Also, another
reason why they are important is that they were made all over the country.
Although the ceramics that we call cultural heritage are only dishes, they are
important in the fact that they tell us these things. Furthermore, ceramics
hold a period's sense of beauty and characteristics, making a world that
holds a period's life and culture.
For this, we researched in Chapter 2 the process of development according
to the change and characteristics of each period of the Joseon Dynasty. The
Joseon Dynasty was a period that had a social structure where the common
people were oppressed and ruled by aristocrats as it was a Confucian society.
We looked at our people's painting consciousness and the background of each
period and ideology seen in the white porcelain of the Joseon Dynasty after
differentiating the changes in each period's society into former period, middle
period, and the latter period.
In Chapter 3, we classified the patterns of white porcelain in the Joseon
Dynasty according to the period and deducted the symbolism inherent in the
patterns. The ceramics of the Joseon Dynasty emphasize the practicality and
solidarity of each container, and as such instead of using unnecessary things,
colored patterns were used. Also, by researching the patterns of white
porcelain and categorizing them according to period, it was possible to
understand the symbolism in the ethnic group, region, natural characteristics,
ideologies, and religion of the Joseon Dynasty that were implemented into the
patterns of white porcelain.
In Chapter 4, using the analysis of the symbolism of white porcelain
patterns, we organized the art historical meaning of the patterns of white
porcelain in the Joseon Dynasty. Also, we examined the direction of our
country's ceramic patterns, seeing from our analysis of the patterns'
symbolism that they are not random patterns but are a work of art
themselves as painting expressions.
Today, when we look at these beautiful and amazing culture heritage, we
frequently only see the external beauty of traditional patterns and are
interested in ornaments and not in the internal world. Through the white
porcelain of the Joseon Dynasty we can understand the people's sense of
style and beauty at that time, and also can say that understanding the
symbolic meanings of patterns in the ceramics as craftworks that were the
most common and popular of all of our people's culture is important.
