This thesis examines the relationship between family's socioeconomic status and adolescents' depressive symptoms focusing on mediating effect of social support. This study used secondary data analysis using 6th data from ‘2010 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey’(KCYPS), which included 2,378 middle school 1st graders. The data analysis was conducted through the SPSS Statistics 22, and to test the thesis hypothesis, the hierarchical regression analysis was carried out. The main outcome of the study are as follows: First, family's socioeconomic status has a negative correlation with the adolescent's depressive. Second, family's socioeconomic status and parental support have a negative correlation with the adolescent's depressive. Third, family's socioeconomic status and peer support have a negative correlation with the adolescent's depressive. Fourth, family's socioeconomic status and community support have a negative correlation with the adolescent's depressive.
The socioeconomic status of the family affects not only directly the depression of adolescents but also indirectly social support (parent, peer, community). These results suggest that it is important to consider the socioeconomic status of the family in the intervention of adolescent depression. Based on the research and discussion results, advices were provided on social welfare practices aimed at intervening adolescents’ depressive symptoms.
