Recently, there is an increasing frequency of use of streams around downtown, and there is a growing demand for stream management. However, there is an increasing demand for the use of waterfront with relatively rich natural environment in existing urbanized areas where it is difficult to secure leisure and recreational spaces.
In Seoul, forest and soil have declined due to climate change and environmental pollution by dense development, flowering time has also changed and there have been many changes in urban ecosystems. In addition, the biodiversity has greatly decreased.
In the late 1990s, Seoul city aimed to protect rich ecoregions with high conservation value such as wetland and forest with rich biodiversity from artificial damage and development and to preserve them as a sound urban ecosystem. For this purpose, Seoul City enacted 'Seoul City Ordinance for Natural Environment Conservation' in 1999 and has designated and managed ecological landscape conservation area according to this standard.
However, because the stream ecosystems in the ecological landscape conservation area designated by Seoul City were not continuously managed, it is necessary to implement systematic management of the whole stream from the perspective of the whole vegetation management such as invasion of exotic species into vegetation and dominant vegetation and management of surrounding facilities.
Therefore, this study performed a comparative analysis of this research investigation and research report established before 2010 by investigating 4 stream ecosystems in the ecological landscape conservation area. This study proposed a method of environment-friendly stream vegetation management for maintaining healthy ecosystems and natural landscapes through relative dominance values, naturalization rates, soil analysis and analysis of management state.
As a result of the analysis of the flora, Asteraceae were highly distributed in all research subject areas, herbaceous plants were more distributed than woody plants, and Humulus japonicus had high relative dominance value. Subsequently, Phragmites communis was highly dominant in Amsa-dong (岩寺洞), Gwnagnaru District and Tancheon (炭川), Ambrosia trifida in Seongnaecheon (城內川) and Godeok-dong (高德洞). This study compared the sociability and cover of hazardous species, Humulus japonicus, Ambrosia trifida and Ambrosia artemisiifolia. The results showed that it was necessary to prevent Humulus japonicus from growing for the growth and development of other occurrence species because they varied greatly from other occurrence species. In addition, it will be effective to create various landscapes by planting Phragmites communis and Miscanthus sinensis with high initial germination rate.
It was confirmed that the analysis results of the naturalization rate and urbanization index were an average of 14.8% higher than the naturalization rate in the research report established before 2010. Considering the characteristics of exotic species that are quickly established in a disturbed location environment with a high frequency of interference, the stream ecosystem in the research subject area is with the high disturbance pressure.
At the periphery of stream ecosystems in the ecological landscape conservation area, surrounding vegetation was severely damaged by various reasons such as road widening and increase in the rate of utilization. Therefore, it was far from a natural stream, and invasive and hazardous species were highly dominant because the vegetation deteriorated and ecosystems were disturbed.
Currently, each local government is designated to manage the ecological landscape conservation area in Seoul City, but many problems of stream ecosystems and threat factors have emerged because systematic management methods have not been established.
Therefore, it is necessary to implement management smoothly by establishing a management system based on the management state of the current ecological landscape conservation area. Furthermore, it will be effective to continue to study environment-friendly management methods of stream ecosystems in the ecological landscape conservation area in order to maintain healthy urban ecosystems with high biodiversity.
