Abstract
In the past and modern housing culture, the primary purpose is to use residential life styles. However, due to the increase in income level and the five-day-workweek, modern people began to prefer well-being and healing perspective of their lives, which brought lots of attention to housing culture of suburban houses. Going along with the trends, suburban housing complex started to be developed and sold in the locations not far from the downtown area, gaining attention of the public. However, it is problematic that development of suburban houses is driven by profitability of individual developers or construction companies without thought for the environment. In order to prevent these problems from happening, not only legal regulations but also environment-friendly location of suburban houses is very important so that the nature and human beings live in harmony by human beings adapting to the nature. Therefore, we could seek for wisdom of our ancestors by adopting Feng-shui theory to modern architecture, which will lead to coexistence of the human beings and nature, without destroying the Mother Nature. Also, considering the benefits provided by the nature, the nature should never be destroyed and when developing suburban houses, the convenience and profitability should not be given the highest priorities but one must find the ways to let the nature and human beings live in harmony. If we recognize the value of the nature, we should keep in mind that the future of nature is the future of human kind thus we must pass on the valuable nature soundly to our descendants. According to the Feng-shui theory, not only suburban houses but also general architectures are ideal to be located in areas with Sands of Four Spirits(四神砂) where the spirits of mountains are well inherited. In Feng-shui theory, these locations are deemed as ideal spots that contain the wind and obtain the water(藏風得水).
The present research studies suburban houses located within one-hour distance from northern and eastern directions of Daegu city, and five complexes are selected including ① Hwasung Greenville Suburban Houses ② Palgong Jeonwon Village ③ Yuchang Jeonwon Village ④ Yangji Meogu Village ⑤ Biseul Oak Valley, in order to apply important theories of Feng-shui theory such as Yongse(龍勢), Jise(地勢), Suse(水勢), Jwahyangron(坐向論) and Bibo Feng-shui(裨補風水). Also, the present research examines 3 Principles of Yangtaeg(陽宅三大看法) including Baesanimsu(背山臨水), Jeonjeohugo(前低後高), and Jeonchakhugwan(前窄後寬). Among the theories of Yangtaeg Feng-shui(陽宅風水) that can be applied to suburban houses, Dong·Seo Sataegron is selected among the contents of Yangtaeg Samyo(陽宅三要). However, among the theories of Feng-shui, Hyeolron(穴論) is argued by many scholars from academic perspectives thus it is excluded in this research when analyzing suburban houses.
If suburban houses are located in areas with favorable natural locations and space composition in accordance with the conditions recommended by Feng-shui theory, it would be like a highly valuable home where people can enjoy their healthy and happy lives. The present research intends to study the impact of suburban houses on residential lives from the standpoint of Feng-shui theory, which is a traditional discipline of natural science. Improvement in income level and standard of living has brought changes in social structures and recognition towards housing cultures such as expansion of leisure time and increased attention to health, driving many people to leave overcrowded houses in the city and go to suburban houses.
Those people desire to escape from the environmental, noise, smoke and water pollution in the downtown and prefer to enjoy healthy and high-quality lives in suburban areas. In addition, the present research intends to propose methodological directions to be applied to location selection and house building while protecting the nature, which could be used for development and construction of suburban houses. The purpose of this research is to consider the characteristics of suburban houses and apply Feng-shui theory in terms of location, landscaping, site plan, street structures within the complex to study location selection and space composition, in order to propose directions for development of suburban houses and residential environment in the city.
