The present study embarked on an exploration into the effects of COVID-19 induced stress among Chinese university students on their potential addiction to TikTok, with specific consideration towards the mediating effect of self-efficacy and the moderating role of self-regulation. An online survey was conducted with a sample of 332 Chinese undergraduate students via the internet.
Findings from the analysis demonstrated a positive correlation between the university students' stress derived from COVID-19 and their addiction to TikTok. In contrast, self-efficacy displayed a negative correlation with TikTok addiction. Expanding further in the mediation analysis, self-efficacy partially mediated the relationship between COVID-19 stress and TikTok addiction among university students. In other words, the stress students experienced due to COVID-19 reduced their sense of self-efficacy, which in turn escalated the degree of their TikTok addiction. Additionally, the study identified a significant moderating effect of self-regulation in the relationship between COVID-19 stress and self-efficacy. That is, the negative impact of COVID-19 stress on self-efficacy was relatively less among students possessing a higher level of self-regulation.
These discoveries underscore the significant role of self-efficacy in alleviating university students' COVID-19 stress and reducing the degree of TikTok addiction. They also emphasize the effects of a high level of self-regulation in protecting psychological health. Future research could delve into specific strategies for suppressing TikTok addiction and enhancing self-regulation.
