This study aims to examine reading certification system as a plan to activate reading of undergraduates. In short, this study is to deal with introduction of reading certification system as an efficient plan to solve problems of reading underachievement of undergraduates throughout universities in Korea, to improve reading habit and to practice reading. Reading certification system is widely generalized all over the society and especially, it has have positive effects on elementary, middle and high schools. So it is judged that it would activate reading of undergraduates in universities by introducing reading certification system.
Now, Kang-won National University is leading activation of reading by introducing reading certification system aggressively and many universities are preparing for introduction of reading certification system based on system of Kang-won National University. Therefore, in this study, efficient enforcement plans of reading certification system were investigated across domestic universities focusing on reading certification system of Kang-won National University.
In chapter 2, first of all, theories regarding concepts of reading and reading education, and development of reading ability were arranged as a theoretical investigation in relation to reading and reading certification system, and prior to research on reading certification system, general theories concerning concepts of reading certification, purposes, assessment range and assessment methods were arranged. Chapter 3 targets surveying actual status of reading certification system after examining the overall management of reading certification system in Kang-won National University. Kang-won National University implements reading certification system as a sphere of qualification certification system for graduation and especially, enforces reading certification system specifically by constructing CBRT(Computer-based Reading Test) system to implement it. Therefore, standards and grades of reading certification system, assessment methods, system instructions, selection of recommended books and evaluation DB were examined in depth through CBRT system and then, applying status, passage status and reading status were inspected to comprehend actual condition of reading certification system. In chapter 4, satisfaction of use in reading certification system was surveyed to determine how students in Kang-won National University accept it. Survey was performed with 100 of registered students, who are in senior year using questionnaire consisting of 14 categories. As a result, it was found that reading certification system is helpful for student forming reading habits, students' readings significantly increased and students prefer CBRT system as an assessment method. In addition, students decided reading, because it is the easiest qualification for graduation and they asked for improvement in recommended books and environment of CBRT assessment room. The goal of chapter 5 is to find improvements in selection of recommended books, evaluation of impressions after reading books, development of evaluation questions and development of verification key words based on reading certification system in Kang-won National University in order to efficiently implement reading certification system all over the universities in Korea. Also, improvement of reading certification system, development of various contents and environmental improvement in Kang-wan National University were dealt with as institutional supports to implement reading certification system efficiently. Lastly, reading certification system to activate reading of undergraduates was examined.
In conclusion, the scope of this study is limited, because there is no university to enforce specific reading certification system but Kang-won National University, however, it is expected that reading certification system would be gradually expanded, because many universities are now about to introduce it to strengthen reading education. Accordingly, studies on reading certification system to activate reading of undergraduates would be performed in more various and detailed way in future.
