The traditional home has played an important educational role in forming basic life customs and making learned manners. Today in our society, functions of home education has become less effective, home cannot play an exemplary role for children, as nuclear families increase, as a range of women's social advancement is expanded and as the rate of divorce is surged. The functional deterioration of home education have negative effects on the formation of students' life customs, attitudes and values. This is making students far from traditional ethics, values and subjectivity and lose the true meaning of human life.
The purpose of this study is to examine the traditional education of woman and find the application of our great traditions related to personal character formation. The Hanjungrok was written by Hyegyounggung Hong who was king Youngjo's daughter-in-law, Crown Prince Sado's wife and king Jeongjo's mother. As described in the「Hanjungrok」, key elements of ethical home education are filial piety(孝) towards parents, brotherliness(悌), and the affection(慈) of children. Here, filial piety means not blind obedience and sacrifice for parents, but children's expression of love and esteem for parents under a child personal accommodation. 'Brotherliness' means respect for the older brother and therefrom the love of the younger one. And 'affection' is parents' unconditional love of children. These three ethical norms of home would play important roles in raising the morality of home and strengthening the union of family members. Thus an ideal woman was showed a wise wife, a loving mother, a exemplary elder by the Hanjungrok.
The educational objective of the traditional education of woman was to be a whole man of moral. It was appeared a wise wife, a loving mother, a exemplary elder. The educational contents of the traditional education of woman were 'Temperance' and 'Respect'. They had emphasized on industry and thrift. They practiced industrious and thrifty life oneself but generous to others. They considered rites(禮) important as expression of respect. It doesn't mean blind obedience and sacrifice for others. There was courtesy even among intimates. The educational methods of the traditional education of woman were set a good example and impressed by exemplary behaviors. The elders tried to be a good example for young people. It is difficult thing to be a exemplar to others. In this progress, young people had respect for the elders.
In conclusion, The traditional home was excellent educational place and it is important thing to recover the educational function of home. Thus we need a wise wife, a loving mother, a exemplary elder absolutely.
