The intelligent vehicle is a state-of-the-art technology that can actively sense accidental events occurred in road environments and autonomously cope with traffic accident. The information for driver's safety can not be obtained from the inside of a vehicle but also from the outside of a vehicle. In addition, it is shared through heterogeneous networks connecting several objects on the road. The expansion of communication area for traffic information in intelligent vehicle requires to design a connection model of several heterogeneous networks to improve traffic safety. However, only a few studies have been conducted on network architecture, service models, and protocols for intelligent vehicles. In this paper, networks for intelligent vehicles are classified into three parts: in-vehicle network, roadside-to-vehicle network and inter-vehicle network. Characteristics and constraints of network protocols are analyzed and two main studies are described based on the analysis.
First, a network architecture and a service model are proposed for vehicle tele-operation that can control and manage vehicles at a distance. The proposed model is based on the CAN-based in-vehicle network and CDMA-based roadside-to-vehicle network. The in-vehicle network becomes a local network connected to the Internet through a gateway. In a detailed study, a service model and user interfaces are designed to provide vehicle tele-operation services. A remote vehicle control system and services are implemented to evaluate the performance of proposed model. The results of the performance evaluation in various mobile environments show that round trip time takes less than one second and its QoS is suitable for vehicle tele-operation services.
Second, three types of multi-hop broadcast protocols, PCB, RCB, and OCB, are proposed to disseminate emergency messages efficiently in VANET. Since emergency messages in VANET are closely related to driver's safety, a protocol is needed to disseminate emergency messages promptly. PCB calculates a contention window size based on the distance from a source node and randomly selects a waiting time for message re-broadcasting in the given contention-window. RCB reserves a part of the given contention-window so that a relay node farther from the source node can be selected. OCB optimizes the size of given contention-window so that the farthest node from the source node can be chosen as a relay node by selecting a shorter waiting time for message re-broadcasting. The proposed three multi-hop broadcast protocols for VANET have a low network load and a short end-to-end delay time for disseminating emergency messages through contention between nodes using the contention-window. According to the results of the performance evaluation via computer simulation, the proposed protocols show about 83% higher performance than other existing broadcast protocols.
