The purpose of this study was to suggest teaching and learning methods for enhancing statistical thinking abilities of young children, thus offering some directions to the statistics education for young children.
For that purpose, the following research agenda were prepared; first, based on the basic understanding of the academic nature and characteristics of statistics and the basic concept of probability, the statistical thinking was arranged in a way that would be appropriate for child development. Second, the statistics related contents were drawn from the Sixth Kindergarten Curriculum and used to reorganize the statistics curriculum for babies. Third, based on the Sixth Kindergarten Curriculum and the reorganized statistics curriculum, diverse statistics teaching and learning methods for young children were searched for.
The research results report that the statistics curriculum for the Korean kindergarten should reflect the statistical thinking experiences in each level(I, II, and common) to help young children enhance their statistical thinking abilities. Thus the 'Probability and Analyzing Data' from the American NCTM was analyzed and adopted to reorganize the statistics curriculum for young children. Based on the reorganized statistics curriculum for young children and according to the selection criteria of themes and contents, three teaching and learning methods were suggested; they were projects, N.I.E. and cooperative learning. And the desirable directions were suggested for the future of statistics education for young children.
The effects of this study need to be tested in an empirical study. Then with the verification, the suggested teaching and learning methods should be made use of at school along with more diverse ideas. And the Ministry of Education and the educational agencies in each city and province should make efforts to develop training programs for teachers and produce and distribute teaching and learning guidebooks.
