With the development of modern technological civilization, the influence of media has expanded and media have been regarded as an environment from a certain point of view. Now, media provide experience and information, deliver thought and value, and play the role of education which socializing people. In this vein, media are the channel of communication and the modalities of culture for the present.
Therefore, the acceptance of Korean language education, which attaches great importance to its linguistic realization of meaning of media, presents media literacy, which comprehensively requires not only the understanding and production of media texts but also selective and critical abilities for diverse information, as an important task of education.
The purpose of this study was to grope after a guiding strategy of media language education in order for learners to cultivate media literacy with media texts from the aspect of understanding and communicating in the changing reality of language use. For this, the investigator selected visual advertising texts out of visual media texts, which emerging as a dominant communicative language and method for the present, and then examined a teaching and learning model to cultivate learners' (functional, critical and cultural) media literacy.
In order to realize the purpose of study, the investigator worked out a teaching and learning model which could realize the learning of semantic production method and discourse custom as a complex language modality of visual advertising texts; of extracting sociocultural value and persuasion mechanism implicated in texts via critical analysis of discourse; and of taking part in as a firsthand producer on the basis of understanding the production structure and process.
This study is seemingly meaningful in that the investigator presented a practical teaching and learning model which is possible to practice in class and can achieve a systematic approach to media in the actual scenes of school where the development of a systematic and practical learning model is not realized yet. In particular, the investigator designed the area-oriented stepwise learning in order to extend learners' capability in the three areas (functional, critical and cultural) of literacy and provided viewpoints with which media could be understood not as technology but as culture. The investigator hopes that via the above measures a learner, who lives in the era of media overflow, gets out of the place of passive acceptor of textual meaning and then enters the road of a producer of self-reflection-oriented meaning which consisting of meaningful knowledge in his life.
