본 논문은 淸代에 있어서 훌륭한 서예가로 손꼽히는 墨卿 伊秉緩(1754-1815) 서예를 중심으로 그의 예술세계를 연구한 것이다.
伊秉綬는 대대로 詩禮之家에서 태어나, 훌륭한 가문과 좋은 환경 속에 성장하였고, 부친의 엄격한 가정교육과 당대 주변의 유명한 학자들과 일찍부터 접할 수 있는 기회를 가졌다. 그의 부친 伊朝棟(1728-1807)은 程朱學에 깊은 연구가 있었다. 따라서 伊秉綬 또한 부친으로부터 家學으로 程·朱의 영향을 받았으며 문학과 예술에도 일관하였다. 특히 시문·서화는 물론 전각에 이르기까지 두루 뛰어났다. 이것을 바탕으로 관리가 되어서도 학문과 예술에 관심을 두고 백성을 다스렸으니 후대에 청백리로 백성들의 추앙을 받았다. 이러한 점으로 볼 때 그는 정치·경제·문화·예술 등 다방면에 조예가 깊은 淸代의 지성을 대표한다 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다.
그는 서예에 있어서 모든 서체를 잘 썼으며, 특히 예서는 대담하고 고박한 풍격을 지니고 있어 그 기개의 당당함이 당대 최고였다. 그의 예서는 漢代의 예서 뿐만 아니라 殷·周의 金文과 秦의 小篆까지 두루 섭렵한 다음 그 틀에서 벗어난 독창적인 예서를 창출했다. 그리하여 그의 글씨는 크면 클 수록 더욱 웅장한 기세를 느끼게 한다. 그리고 그의 行草書는 晉의 二王과 唐의 顔眞卿(709-785)을 바탕으로 하여 양쪽 모두 받아들이고, 나아가 宋·元·明의 많은 서예가들의 글씨를 臨書하였으며, 그의 행초서에는 그만의 독특한 의취가 엿보인다.
18세기 후반부터 朝鮮의 신진 학자들이 淸나라에 가는 使臣을 수행하여, 당시 淸나라의 저명한 학자들과 交遊하였는데, 伊秉綬도 그 중의 한 사람이다. 그러므로 그의 서예가 우리 나라 서예가들에게 간접적인 영향을 미쳤을 것으로 추정해 볼 수 있다. 특히 朴齊家(1750-1805)는 淸나라를 세 번씩이나 왕래하면서, 당시의 새로운 학문과 예술을 접하고 돌아와 朝鮮 후기의 학자는 물론 예술가에게 영향을 주었다. 秋史 金正喜(1786-1856)는 일찍이 北學의 대가인 朴齊家로부터 학문적인 薰陶를 받았으며, 그를 통해 당시 淸代의 서예에 대한 이야기를 들었을 것이다. 그리고 秋史는 24살에 부친 酉堂 金魯敬(1766-1840)의 淸나라 사행에 子弟軍官으로 수행하였다. 이 때 淸代의 서예에 관심을 두었을 것이고, 귀국 후 당시 淸代 碑學 풍의 서예와 학문에 깊은 연구를 하는 계기가 되었다. 따라서 翁方綱을 비롯하여 劉石庵, 鄧石如, 阮元 등 당대 뛰어난 서예가들 글씨의 영향을 받았고, 특히 伊秉綬의 독특한 예서는 훗날 秋史體의 형성에 영향을 끼쳤을 것임을 알 수 있다.
伊秉綬는 당시 독창적인 예술세계를 창조하였으나, 250여 년이 지난 지금까지도 그에 대한 인식이나 연구는 같은 시기에 활동한 다른 서예가에 비해 미미한 것이 현실이다. 그것은 그가 어느 파벌에 치우치지 않은 관리로서의 역할에 힘쓴 반면, 순수 예술가로 많은 제자를 양성하지 못한 것을 원인으로 들수 있다. 그렇지만 그의 학문적인 업적과 예술적인 역량은 더 심층적으로 연구되고, 재평가되어야 할 것이다.

This thesis was that studied for artistic world of Yi, Bing-Shou(1754-1815) who was fine calligrapher leading in the Ching Dynasty centered with his calligraphy.
Yi, Bing-Shou was born by poetic home for generations and had the opportunity to access with famous scholars in that times as well as puritanical home education by his father and the surroundings as growing from fine family and favorable environment.
Yi, Bing-Shou was also influenced by Jeong & Chu as his home studies from his father since his father Yi, Zhao-Dong had deeply studied of Jeong & Chu-tzu sciences. And, he was consistently excellent to literature and art and especially for poetics as well as calligraphy and to seal engraving. Based on that he had concerned about learning & arts even after he had become a government official and governed the people and was adored by the world as cleanhanded government official at later times. From this point, it is not too much to say that he was a man of character represents the intellect of Ching times in the broad span of politics, economics, culture, arts and etc.
He was evenly well done all writing styles in calligraphy and especially, for ornamental characters his writing was with bold and excellent ancient elegance and its spirit was dauntless and was the top for that times. His ornamental characters were throughly ranged over golden letters of Eun & Chu and up to seal characters of Jin as well as the ornamental characters of Han times (medieval times of China) and created the original ornamental characters get rid of the frame.
Thereby, his characters was grand much more as bigger as much. And, his semi-cursive style of writing & cursive style of brushmanship accepted the both by originated from Erwang of Jin and Yan, Zhen-Qing of Tang and further imitated letters of famous calligraphers of Song, Won & Ming times and wrote semi-cursive style and the square style of Chinese handwriting which is new and his peculiar taste was appeared only.
And, his calligraphy was known as gave more impact to our country calligraphers. Since the latter half part of 18th century new scholars of Korea were accompanied by minister went to Ching and exchanged with reputable scholars of Ching at that time and Yi, Bing-Shou was one of them.
Especially, Park, Jae-Ka went three times to Ching and accessed to new learning or art at that time and gave influence to our scholars or art upon return. Chusa Kim, Jeong-Hee was trained under Park, Jae-Ka who was authority of the northern science earlier and heard about calligraphy of Ching times at that time through him and after all he went to Ching accompanied to his father Yudang Kim, No-Kyoung with diplomatic mission as a military officer at his age of 24. At that time he probably had concerned about calligraphy of Yi, Bing-Shou of Ching and after returned home he was deeply studied the calligraphy of Ching times at that time and become an authority and his influence cannot be denied.
The calligraphy of Yi, Bing-Shou was created original artistic world at that time however, it is true that the study or recognition of him now as 250 years or more was passed is insufficient.
Further more studies of calligraphy of Yi, Bing-Shou must be made and his artistic aspect has to be revaluated from now on.
