국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 콜슨 화이트헤드의 『지하철도』에 드러나는 노예제 와 그에 따른 후유증이 세대를 거쳐 존속되는 복합적 양상을 포착하고 화이트헤드가 현대의 인종 갈등 문제에 던지는 경고와 대응 방안을 탐구 하고자 한다. 첫 번째 장에서는 아자리, 메이블, 코라에 이르기까지 세대 를 아우르는 흑인 노예들의 육체적 및 정신적 고통이 어떻게 전달되고 변형되는지를 탐구한다. 또한, 이들의 삶을 통해 집단적 트라우마 속에서 도 제도적 인종차별과 폭력에 대항하는 다양한 생존 전략을 분석한다. 두 번째 장에서는 코라의 대척점에 놓인 노예사냥꾼 릿지웨이의 백인우 월주의 이념을 조명하고, 이러한 사상을 답습한 백인 사회의 모순과 자 기파멸적 경향을 살펴본다. 특히 '흑인공포증'에 사로잡힌 백인들이 어 떻게 인간성을 상실하고 위태로운 공동체를 조성하는지 다룬다. 마지막 장에서는, 화이트헤드가 『지하철도』를 통해 제시하는 미국 인종 문제 에 대한 진단과 아프리카계 미국인들의 투쟁 전략에 초점을 맞춘다. 그 방안은 문해력과 지식을 통한 투쟁, 자기 정체성과 상흔에 대한 깊은 성 찰을 통한 내면의 강화, 그리고 사회적 연대 의식과 집단행동으로 나뉘 어 논의된다. 그리하여 본 연구는 화이트헤드가 결핍과 트라우마로 얼룩 진 미국 사회에 대한 풍자를 통해 인종적 대립과 분열이 심화되는 현상 을 강력하게 경고하고 있음을 강조한다. 주요어 : 콜슨 화이트헤드, 언더그라운드 레일로드, 노예제, 인종 갈등, 백인우월주의, 흑인 자유 투쟁 학 번 : 2021-29103

This research delves into the intricate dynamics of slavery and its enduring aftermath across generations, as depicted in Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad. It also examines Whitehead’s commentary on and responses to contemporary racial conflicts. The first chapter explores how the physical and psychological suffering of Black slaves, spanning generations from Ajarry to Mabel to Cora, is passed down and transformed. It analyzes the various survival strategies employed by these black characters in response to systemic racial discrimination and violence within the context of collective trauma. The second chapter scrutinizes the ideology of white supremacy embodied by the slave catcher Ridgeway, shedding light on the contradictions and self-destructive tendencies inherent in the white society that adheres to this ideology. It delves into how those consumed by “Negrophobia” lose their humanity and contribute to the breakdown of their own communities. In the final chapter, the focus shifts to Whitehead’s diagnosis of racial issues in America and the strategies for resistance presented in The Underground Railroad. These strategies encompass intellectual engagement through literacy and knowledge, personal empowerment via profound reflection on identity and inherited scars, and the importance of social solidarity. This study thus underscores Whitehead’s stark warning regarding racial division and extreme polarization in a society marked by deprivation and trauma.
