Determinants of internationalization of Korean mobile internet startups : case studies of Line & Kakaotalk

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 세계적 패러다임 변화인 4차 산업혁명 하에서 한국 모바일 인터넷 산업에 속한 스타트업의 국제화 결정 요인을 밝히고자 하였다. 4차 산업혁명과 창조경제, 정보통신기술 산업에 대한 이해를 기반으로, 정보통신기술 스타트업의 국제화는 그 의도나 양상이 기존의 기업 국제화 이론에 의해 설명되지 않고, 국제신생벤처이론의 관점에서 설명됨을 규명하였다. 본 연구는 라인과 카카오톡의 해외진출 사례를 통해 1) 창업자의 역량, 2) 기업의 차별화 전략, 3) 지속 가능성을 확보한 진입 시기가 무선인터넷 산업 스타트업 국제화의 결정요인이라고 주장하였으며, 그 중 기업의 차별화 전략이 해외진출에 가장 중요한 요인이라고 보았다. 본 연구에 제시된 국제화의 결정 요인과 이를 반영한 정책적 시사점은 한국 모바일 인터넷 스타트업의 원활한 해외진출을 돕고, 이를 바탕으로 한국이 변화하는 패러다임을 선도하는 국가로 나아가는 데 기여할 것이다.

This paper aims to investigate the determinants of the internationalization of Korean startups in the mobile internet industry by providing in-depth case analysis on the overseas expansion of Line and Kakaotalk. Based on the understanding of the 4th Industrial Revolution, “Creative Economy” and Korean mobile internet industry, this paper contends that the determinants of the internationalization of the startup are the capacity of the founder, the differentiation strategy and the entry time with sustainability. Among them, the differentiation strategy of the firms is the most critical factor affecting the internationalization of the firms. Furthermore, this paper proposes the policy implications to enable the vigorous overseas expansion of Korean startups. In this regards, Korea is possible to take initiatives in the 4th Industrial Revolution which is an ongoing paradigm shift.
