[Sung-kuk Kim’s <Violin Concerto ‘Jindo Arirang’> : A Musical Analysis]
Korean traditional orchestras, often referred to as Gugak orchestras, employing a unique formation primarily based on Korean traditional instruments, have experienced a significant increase in their number since the inaugural performance of the Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Orchestra in 1964.
The Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Orchestra has consistently sought ways to modernize and popularize traditional music while ensuring its continued vitality. As part of these efforts, they introduced a mixed-type orchestra in 2022, fusing elements of gugak orchestra, Western orchestra, and electronic sounds. This study analyzes Sung-kuk Kim's <Violin Concerto ‘Jindo Arirang’>, a piece for a likewise mixed orchestra, on such aspects as the structure, melody, rhythm, harmony, and orchestration. Consequently, deciphers the musical characteristics of the work through a combined interpretation of the acoustic elements accompanying the large-scale instrumentation, and the folk song <Jindo Arirang> under a novel perspective of music.
<Violin Concerto ‘Jindo Arirang’> consists of a total of 341 measures and has the structure of [Introduction-A-B-C-A'-C'-A"-Coda]. The piece features a fragmented main melody based on variations of the "receiving line" of Jindo Arirang, and the introduction of new contrasting melodies, with the development of the melody through repetition and variation throughout the piece. In addition, the characteristics of minimal music can be found through the continuous rhythmic pattern, sustained notes, and minimized harmonic progression. The key begins in E minor and modulates to G minor, D minor, and A minor, particularly during the climax, emphasizing the thematic melody while minimizing the harmonic support of the folk song's responding line to create a sense of tension and release. The contrasting timbres and dynamic ranges of the Western and Korean traditional instruments demonstrate the new model for gugak orchestra presented by the mixed ensemble. This study illuminates the musical approaches explored in <Violin Concerto ‘Jindo Arirang’> and aims to serve as a valuable resource for creators and researchers interested in exploring chromatic experimentation with traditional music.

[김성국 작곡 <바이올린 협주곡 ‘진도아리랑’> 분석]
국악관현악이란 국악기 또는 국악기를 중심으로 편성된 관현악 형식을 의미하며, 1964년 서울시립국악관현악단의 창단 연주회를 시작으로 여러 국악관현악단이 창설되었다. 서울시국악관현악단은 2022년 국악관현악, 서양 오케스트라, 전자음향을 결합한 믹스드 오케스트라를 선보이며 전통음악의 현대적 계승과 국악의 대중화를 목표로 다양한 시도를 이어가고 있다. 본 연구는 믹스드 오케스트라 편성에 맞춰 작곡된 <바이올린 협주곡 ‘진도아리랑’>의 악곡 구조, 선율, 리듬, 화성, 관현악법을 분석하였다. 대규모 편성에서 나타나는 음향적 요소와 민요 <진도아리랑>의 새로운 음악적 해석을 통해 해당 작품의 음악적 특징을 고찰하였다.
<바이올린 협주곡 ‘진도아리랑’>은 총 341마디로 구성되며, [서주-A-B-C- A'-C'-A"-코다]의 구조를 갖는다. 진도아리랑 받는 선율을 변주한 주제 선율의 파편화와 새로운 대비 선율을 제시, 반복과 변주를 통한 선율 전개 방식이 곡 전반에 걸쳐 나타난다. 또한, 지속적인 리듬패턴과 지속음, 최소화된 화성진행을 통해 미니멀음악의 특징을 확인할 수 있다. 조성은 E단조로 시작하여 클라이맥스 구간에 걸쳐 G단조, D단조, A단조로 전조하며 주제 선율을 강조하고, 민요 받는 선율의 화성적 색채를 최소화하여 곡의 긴장과 해소를 형성한다. 서양 오케스트라와 국악기의 질감 및 넓은 음역을 활용한 대비적 표현을 통해, 믹스드 오케스트라가 제시하는 새로운 국악관현악 모델을 확인할 수 있다. 본 연구는 <바이올린 협주곡 ‘진도아리랑’>에서 나타난 음악적 시도를 조명하며, 전통음악에 대한 다양한 색채적 실험을 모색하는 창작자와 연구자에게 유의미한 자료를 제공할 것으로 기대한다.
