OpenAI's ChatGPT service, released in late 2022, sparked a global sensation. The design field, directly tied to visual production, also showed a mixed reaction of anticipation and confusion at the emergence of generative AI. Expectations centered on efficiency—that automated image generation would reduce designers' workload—coexisted with existential anxiety that designers' uniqueness and existing capabilities might become obsolete. The design field has always reacted sensitively to emerging technologies. Its response to the advent of high-speed internet services over 30 years ago mirrored its current reaction to artificial intelligence. This study originates from an awareness of these strikingly similar reactions across past and present, aiming to illuminate the diverse perceptions and responses of stakeholders during the early adoption phase of the internet.
Internet services have become so deeply ingrained in daily life that their presence is barely perceptible today, placing us in a situation where it is difficult to consciously acknowledge their origins or history. Despite being the most universally used technology today, meaningful discussions or reactions to it rarely generate active discourse beyond the initial period of its emergence. In this regard, this study, which examines the process of internet adoption, aims not only to collect the reactions brought about by the distribution of new technology but also to consider the historical significance that its discussion can still hold today. Particularly concerning its relationship with design, research on the internet has been updated within the context of industrial development, but studies addressing its contemporary significance are absent. At a time when a critical perspective on technology's pervasiveness and influence is needed, this study focuses on the internet, which can be considered its origin.
This study takes as its subject the circumstances and reactions of the era in which design was invoked within the relationship between the internet and digital media. Thus, this study aims to capture the perceptions and reactions of design field actors confronting the new technology of the internet within the framework of ‘expectation’ and ‘anxiety’. To this end, it examines the contemporary social and cultural background and conducts analysis through collecting and classifying statements recorded in past literature and media.
First, this study examined the discourse landscape that emerged from the moment the information and communications revolution was imported and began to flow into the country. It explored the process by which the environment for introducing the internet was established within the national context, the context of market and culture, and the context of design. The internet is not a technology that functions solely through the construction of internet infrastructure. It requires not only the technical establishment of high-speed internet networks but also the public's awareness and understanding of computers to operate effectively. This study also focused on the decisive roles played by government and corporate movements in creating such a media environment. The government, through design policies, and corporations, through design management approaches, both focused on design, seeking to realize expectations within the relationship between the internet and digital technology as industrial value.
Based on an understanding of how the dominant discourse of the era was formed, this study collected and conducted discourse analysis on the responses of design field actors that emerged between 1995 and 2002, a period when discourse on the internet was particularly active. The subjects' responses were analyzed across three layers: the identity of design, the labor of design, and the future of design.
First, a belief circulated that design would be newly defined in the internet era. Expectations emerged regarding the opportunities the new design field would bring and the resulting economic value creation. Conversely, some positions expressed a primal anxiety about the introduction of unfamiliar technology itself or criticized an excessive technocratic attitude.
Second, regarding design labor, existential discussions about designers' standing as workers dominated. Expectations included expanded roles and capabilities in the information society, anticipated status elevation, and liberation from fixed conditions. Meanwhile, some designers feared being left behind by the rapid pace of technological development. Concerns also emerged about the decline in designers' capabilities due to industry monopolization by specific designers and the flood of information.
Finally, the advent of the internet amplified both expectations and anxieties about the future as the 21st century approached. It was a period marked by blind faith in specific media and fantasies about the affluent future enabled by digital technology. However, this focus on the future also signified a break with the past. As the position of traditional media, such as print media that formed the foundation of designers' work, became unstable, counter-movements emerged. Discussions also arose about the power dynamics surrounding technological monopolies held by Western nations. As a reaction to the phenomenon of the future being the focus, discourses emerged that sought to uncover and return to the values of the past. This can be seen as a manifestation of anxiety about being disconnected from existing values and order.
This study covers the period from before the introduction of the internet to the time after its commercialization. Particularly, this study focuses on the emotions and utterances of individual subjects that formed major discourses, though they were not recorded in history. Thus, this study sought to reveal how subjects surrounded by the new technology of the internet positioned themselves and their designs within certain relationships. The internet was imbued with meaning within the generative movements formed by its users.
