There are largely two different flows in the Old Testament. One is the Deuteronomistic history, and the other is the Chronicler’s history. The huge amount of materials of the two are records of Israel history made by Israelites themselves. The two history books are overlapped in large part, but they described the same incidents from a different perspective and in a different literary style. It indicates that the writers of the two history books described the history from their own unique viewpoint and from a different theological standpoint. It’s required to look into the contemporary circumstances of the times when the two history books were written in order to have a profound understanding of the history books.
A method of historical criticism was employed in this study. Chapter 2 dealt with the theological thought of the historians, involving the age of their activities, contemporary background, goal of recording and theological themes. Chapter 3 covered the transportation of the ark of the covenant. The meaning and background of the ark of the covenant were discussed, and the book of Samuel and the book of Chronicles were compared in terms of that. Chapter 4 looked into the construction of the temple. The meaning of temple construction was briefly described, and the book of Samuel and the book of Chronicles were compared as well in terms of that by focusing on David and Solomon. Chapter 5 reached a conclusion.
The ark of the covenant and the temple are symbols of God’s presence, and they were especially important for David. Therefore, it’s very important to transport the ark of the covenant to get it back, and building the temple was very important as well. When the texts of the books were compared, it’s found that the historian who wrote the book of Chronicles described David as a devout and ideal king and proved how much he was God-centered.
