The purpose of this study is to design a teaching and learning model that utilizes generative AI as a peer learner in elementary social studies and to examine the effects of interactions between generative AI and human learners on deepened conceptual understanding, the quality of problem-solving solution generation, and knowledge and information processing competency. To achieve this purpose, a social studies instructional program utilizing generative AI as a peer learner was designed and implemented based on the fifth-grade unit Population Distribution in Korea in the 2022 Revised National Curriculum. In addition, instructional activities incorporated prompt-generation strategies, human–AI interaction strategies, and strategies for sustaining interactions with AI to facilitate effective collaboration between students and generative AI. The study compared and analyzed the experimental and control groups in terms of deepened conceptual understanding, the quality of problem-solving solution generation, and knowledge and information processing competency. Furthermore, the interaction process between students and generative AI was analyzed.
The findings of the study are as follows.
First, the experimental group that participated in lessons using generative AI as a peer learner demonstrated statistically significant differences in deepened conceptual understanding compared with the control group. Through repeated processes of comparing, examining, revising, and refining concepts with generative AI, students showed deeper conceptual understanding in terms of conceptual accuracy, reconstruction of relationships among concepts, and the application and extension of concepts.
Second, the experimental group demonstrated statistically significant differences in the quality of problem-solving solution generation compared with the control group. Students collaboratively explored the causes of problems and possible solutions with generative AI and repeatedly examined and revised the validity, justification, and feasibility of proposed solutions, thereby producing more appropriate and well-founded solutions.
Third, the experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in knowledge and information processing competency compared with the control group. Rather than accepting AI-generated information uncritically, students evaluated the reliability and validity of information by consulting textbooks and various reference materials. Through repeated processes of selecting, analyzing, and reconstructing relevant information, they improved their ability to utilize knowledge and information effectively.
In addition, the classroom interaction analysis revealed that students repeatedly engaged in generating questions, comparing responses, critically evaluating information, and revising and refining their ideas while interacting with generative AI. Likewise, generative AI continuously adjusted its explanations and alternative suggestions according to students’ questions and requests, responding dynamically to their thinking processes. These interaction processes demonstrate that generative AI functioned not merely as an information provider but as a peer learner that actively participated in the collaborative construction of meaning and problem solving.
Overall, the findings suggest that social studies instruction utilizing generative AI as a peer learner has educational potential for enhancing deepened conceptual understanding, improving the quality of problem-solving solution generation, and strengthening knowledge and information processing competency. In particular, the educational effectiveness of generative AI appears to derive not simply from the information it provides but from the collaborative interaction process in which students and AI jointly construct meaning through repeated cycles of question generation, response comparison, critical evaluation, and revision. These findings indicate the potential of generative AI to serve as a peer learner that promotes students’ thinking and collaborative problem solving in social studies classrooms. Furthermore, this study provides theoretical implications and practical possibilities for designing teaching and learning approaches that position generative AI as a peer learner in social studies education.
