디즈니 애니메이션에서 표현된 여성의 몸

국문 초록 (Abstract)

몸에 대한 구체적 연구는 시대적 변화에 따라 발전되었다. 과거의 몸은 가부장적 사회의 통제, 지배 권력에 의해 의미를 부여했다면, 현대에선 몸에 대한 사회적 의미가 변화하였다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 연구를 통해 몸이 표현하는 중요성을 알 수 있는데, 아동 뿐 만 아니라 다양한 연령대가 시청 가능한 가족 오락물로 자리 잡은 디즈니 애니메이션이 표현하고 있는 여성의 몸은 이러한 중요성을 담고 있는가에 대해 분석하고자 한다.
디즈니 애니메이션의 명성이 지금까지 이루어질 수 있었던 이유는 ‘백설공주와 일곱난쟁이’, ‘인어공주’ 등과 같은 과거 작품들의 지나치게 단순한 내러티브구조와 천편일률적인 스토리 형식에서 벗어나 점차 진화되어, ‘겨울왕국’, ‘모아나’ 같이 사건의 열쇠를 지닌 여주인공의 등장으로 보다 다양하고 자유로운 방식의 표현이 이루어지고 있기 때문이다. 그렇다면, 이와 같은 스토리와 구조 변화처럼 캐릭터 또한 시대적 변화를 반영했는가.
애니메이션의 스토리를 이끌어가며 관객들에게 가장 많이 비춰지는 여성주인공 캐릭터의 경우 전형적인 미의 기준에 따른 몸매가 오늘날까지 유지되어지고 있는 것을 볼 수 있다. 여전히 애니메이션에서의 몸은 단순히 캐릭터 이미지를 재현하는 도구이며 상업적인 수단으로 이용되고 있는 것이다. 이러한 외형 표현은 완전히 성숙되지 않은 아이들의 여성관에 무의식적으로 영향을 끼칠 것이라고 추론된다.
여성에 대한 재현은 여성에 대한 인식을 심어준다. 즉 수용들의 여성성에 대한 관념과 여성의 역할에 대한 인식을 조건을 짓고, 고정하는데 영향을 미친다. 이미지의 표출이 바탕이 되는 대중매체의 영향력이 확대됨에 따라, 디즈니 애니메이션에 나타난 여성 몸의 의미를 파악하는 것은 중요할 것이다.
이에 본 연구는 이론적 배경에서 여성의 사회적 권력 변화에 따른 몸의 구현방식에 대해 분석하고, 미셀 푸코(Michel Foucault)의 몸과 권력에 의한 이론과 피에르 부르디외(Pierre Bourdieu)의 몸 담론을 바탕으로 사회적인 몸의 의미를 파악하였고, 여성에 대한 사회적 관념의 변화를 통해 여성 몸의 개념적 정의를 살펴봄과 동시에 페미니즘과 시선에 대한 이론을 통한 접근방식으로 디즈니 애니메이션에서 표현된 여성의 몸이 어떻게 재구성 되는지 분석하고자 한다.
즉 본 연구의 관점은 다음과 같다. 디즈니 애니메이션은 시대 흐름을 반영하여 여성의 이미지를 변화해야 한다는 것을 제시하고 있으며, 굳어져버린 사회적 관습과 현실을 벗어난 다양한 시각의 문제를 설정하는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Study on the body has developed with the change in periods. Compared to the past when the definition of body was controlled by the patriarchal society and ruling power, it has now changed over time to hold different societal meanings. Through studies we can find the importance the body holds and we strive to analyze whether female body illustrated in Disney, the source of entertainment for not only children but all ages, holds the same importance.
Disney was able to continue its fame by evolving. They broke away from overly simplified narratives and monotonous plot like in the “Snow White” and “The Little Mermaid” and began to express more freely through female main characters who has the key to the story like in the “Frozen” and “Moana”. Taking the above as true, along with the change in story plot and structure, we should examine whether they have also applied the change of periods to their characters. Female main characters who lead the story and appear on screen the most to the audience, their body shape still follows the classic beauty standards until this day. The body in animation is still merely a tool to produce the character and used as commercial means. Such expression of outward appearance is expected to subconsciously influence the immature children’s view on womanhood.
Reproduction of the female installs the perception on the female. In other words, it shapes and conditions the perceiver’s ideology on the female and fixes it. It is crucial to realize the meaning of the female body in the Disney animation as the influence of the media, the ultimate medium of expression through images, grows.
Therefore, this study strives to analyze the expression of body in link with changes in female roles in the society. We derived the social definition of body from Michel Foucault’s theory on body and power and Pierre Bourdieu’s argument on body. By looking at the conceptual definition of female body through changes in social understanding on the female and ideologies on views and feminism, we are to analyze how female bodies in Disney are reproduced. This study’s main argument is as follows: Disney animations suggest to evolve in expressing the female by reflecting the flow of the time away from the social convention and stock reality, in order to establish more various views.
